Thanks, I assume they know the length or do I need to measure the hub?

Also, looking at 2.15 and 2.50 rim widths.  Probably going to 110/80-18 dual sport tire or 120/80-18 street tire.

Any suggestions?  Will I need to modify the swing arm with those sizes?

Ryca says we have 26" of clearance before swing arm modification.  I believe both of those tires are under 25.5".

You just tell Buchanan that you have an S40/LS650....they already have the statistics for the Savage hubs.

You should be fine if you follow RYCA's suggestions - problems do occur when you get vintage tires that are tall and have flat tread profiles.

I don't understand the need to go to an 18 inch wheel to attain the look , WD and I have with the stock wheel. If you're wanting higher gearing it would be easer/cheaper to do the kawa front pulley converstion to keep the belt.

We all have our quirks about what we like.....I don't understand putting struts on a bike to replace the shocks!

I changed to an 18" wheel as I wanted a Cafe' bike.....not a cruiser.  The 18" rim is a bigger diameter, the tire is far less "beefy" and looks right on the bike.  Going to a 140/90-15 would get about the same OD - but it also slows down the handling and just looks wrong on a bike that is supposed to be light and nimble.

Next time I am changing the rear wheel...maybe I will throw on a spare 15" wheel and tire that I have and snap a comparison photo....maybe even go for a ride and see what it feels like.

For me, this has nothing to do with taller gearing. Personally, I think the Savage is an ugly duckling sportster wannabe.  It's just not my style, but I like that it's a simple, under powered, reliable thumper.  The perfect bike for my wife and two sons learn on and perfect commuting bike for myself.  I purchased the bike for the purpose of turning it into something I think is cool.  It's a matter of what you like. I like old British bikes, early Japanese models with skinny tires and dirt bikes.

Is our 19" front rim a 2.15 or a 2.50??

I'm leaning towards a 2.15 for the rear if the front is a 2.15.  I'm fine with the width for my rear wheel, but I surly don't want my rear rim to be narrower than the front.
