Learn something new every day...

So, after reading about the starter gear torque limiting thingie on the 96 and later motors, I got to thinking.
Hmm, I thought I saw two basic dumb gears on the starter drive when I had the cover off.
But the title says '1996'.
Yank the cover off, and sure enough, the plain Jane gears.
Buy a used set of torque limiting extra special voodoo gears on Ebay.
Finally, it occurs to me to check the serial # of the frame and motor. Sure enough, they don't match. Someone swapped out an earlier motor.
Yolks! I thinks, I wonder if this is a 4 speed bottom end? (I've never run the bike). Quick turn the front pulley and click through the gears
Whew... 5 gears.
The flog continues.....

You do know that if it's Not new, it's considered review, right?

serial numbers and vin numbers never match.
if you don't have a torque limiter gear, could be a '95
also, to put a torque limiter in, you need the right cover.
the torque limiter gear is about 1/2" wider.

I thought I could machine down the boss in the cover and poke the hole a little deeper.
No?

Interesting. On a lot of bikes, motor and frame number are the same.
