I've been known to check it before a ride and minutes after I parked it. Especially as the miles added up.

Yeah, that' my fairly-regular routine.  I check it every week or so before riding and also will go back out to the garage an hour after getting home and see where the level is with warm oil.  Have to admit, I don't check it before riding every time.  I don't have time for that.

I have to admit that I don't check it EVERY time. I check maybe every 2 or 3 rides. It doesn't burn oil fast enough to warrant being that diligent about checking. I have to add maybe 1/2 qt. every dozen or so rides.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

I'm with verslagen. I put a block of wood under the side stand. To make it consistent I use the same piece of wood every time. Mine is 2.25" thick and  the oil comes up to the lower mark on the sight glass.
You can check it as long as you give the oil time to drain down, 15' is fine.
