Steering Lock
06/06/16 at 21:25:25

I just realised my project Savage didn't come with a Steering Lock key. The guy gave me 4 keys and i don't have that one. Is there any way to get a key made for it? I think it's a stubby key? Can the tool lid lock be rekeyed to fit the ignition gas tank key? Huh

don't bother with the fork lock.

you can re key all the locks if you have 1 key the will fit them all.

The tool box lock should use the ignition key. If yours doesn't someone's already been in there.

I don't think you can rekey the fork lock with the ignition key, as it is a lot smaller.

I broke my only fork key off in the fork lock the day I bought it. Luckily it was unlocked and I just pulled the broken part out.  I saved it to have a new key remade, but never got around to it.  The fork lock is a pain anyway.

My local locksmith found the proper key blank and it ended up being what they referred to as a forklift key blank. I don't have the number handy, but it may be different than yours anyway depending...

Also, mine didn't require re-keying, I was just getting a copy made.

I used my fork lock the first few month I rode, but quickly got over it and haven't locked it in a couple of years. I do live in a secure area and work is a safe place to park also so I have no worries.

FWIW, my 2008 is separate from the ignition. Maybe on some older models it was the same?

The fork lock key was never the same as ignition.

I took all the stuff outta my gas cap. A screwdriver would open it. It was apart so I could put a thin plastic shim in it. I also stuffed the neck and sanded the top sealing lip. If you leak fuel, test the top, see if it's flat. Some oil on the little raised area and a piece of glass..

I never could get that stupid fork lock to work anyway. Besides, how many Savages/S40s have you ever heard of that were stolen? Nobody wants 'em. If mine ends up missing one day, I'm going looking for one of you guys!  Grin

The fork lock is a pain and if you lock it and break the key off trying to unlock it you're in trouble, and if someone wants your bike two people can pick it up and toss it in a van faster than you can spit (gone in 60 seconds ring a bell?).
