Turn Signal Blinkers Not Working Right
05/31/16 at 11:52:09

I have a '96 Savage and last year I noticed smoke coming from under my tank that turned out to be my turn signal indicator relay melting.. I ordered a used one off of Ebay and put it in. Checked and everything was working. I made it down the street to get gas and noticed my blinkers would light up, but not blink. My front turn signals light up when I turn bike on & brighten when I initiate turn signals, but do not blink. My left rear lights up but does not blink & right rear does nothing.  I checked the bulb and it does not appear bad, but... PLEASE can someone help me?!?  I got the bike for a great price & honestly would like to avoid a high maintenance bill if possible!!

It would be cheaper to pick up an after market turn signal relay and it would also future-proof you for any changes you make to the turn signals.  You'll need a different one for going LED's but I had to change mine just when changing to different incandescent rear signals.  The Savage is sensitive to any change in the overall current draw.
I'll see which one I bought when I get home but I'll bet you get a quicker response from the great community here!
In any event, doesn't sound like too big a problem.  Makes me think though, I've been getting some thin smoke showing in my headlight when the bike first starts but thinking it was just the exhaust somehow drifting forward.  I'll need to look around a bit more.

The easiest thing to do would be stick another blinker in.
Or, rig up a test on the work bench and see if it is okay
If it's okay, then the wires to and from it need a looking at.

I'd wanna have the tank off, run the blinkers and feel around for any hot spots, wiggle wires, look for insulation that looks like it's been hot. If you saw smoke, Something got hot.
Make sure nobody has replaced the fuses with higher amp ratings. A twenty amp fuse in a ten amp circuit is not okay.

-Note: the required fuses are 20 amp -v1

What sort of after market turn signal relay? I replaced it with the exact same one/model I took out that was fried.
What sort of test on the work bench should I do?

I think what they are advising is to use an electronic flasher.

Did you change to LED bulbs?  Or are you still using 1157/1156 bulbs?

I don't think so or you wouldn't have melted your flasher.
Not flashing usually happens when someone has changed their bulbs to LEDs.

No, I never changed the bulbs. It was the relay that melted, but I did not change anything prior to it happening.

You might want to check the bulbs, there's a high amp variety.
the stock bulbs are 22/8 watt or less than 2 amp on high and .8 amp on low.

The turn signal relay isn't known to melt without a reason......they just sit there most of the time and they do nothing.  If you has a short somewhere.....it could have put the flasher in a condition that it was running all the time - and it overheated and melted.

Now that you have a new flasher....maybe you are seeing a problem that was responsible for the first flasher melting.

Ok, I spoke with a mechanic friend earlier and he told me to check my "blinker/flasher....?" I did not have a pen to write the part name down and now can not remember the name.. Any help/idea what I'm looking for? Not the bulb or the indicator relay. Possibly he said it may be located behind the headlight. We're hoping this is the cause, meaning it's a relatively easy fix. I'd message/call him, but it is late and he works very early. I know you guys can be a huge help VERY quickly. Thanks!!

Well, you're looking for what you have already replaced.
The little tin can with, I wanna say, three wires on one connector. (MODERATOR EDIT:   Little square plastic box with 2 wires, right side of the top frame member....just opposite the ignition coil).  engine frame, beneath the gas tank That's what I said would be the Easiest thing to do.
Now, will an automotive flasher unit fit?
Dangfino...

But,if you take the one off the bike to a parts store and see if they have one with the same connection setup, you'll be on your way.

Now, YOU may not have changed the turn signal s, But, are you sure that they are the same bulb as the stock signals?

My point on
Tank off
Flashers working
Feeling for hot spots
Looking for insulation that appears to have been hot.

And, knowing that the fuses are the correct amperage.

I would be looking at all of that.
