Here's what I did when I remounted the stock tank.
I had to shift it back an inch to clear the vz800 forks.

Make up 2 spacers, same length, 1 has a thru hole, the other is threaded for a 5/16 bolt.
The length is the width of the tank tunnel in the area of the tank mounts less the width of the frame.  Also subtract the width of the dampers.  Divide by 2 and you got the length.  I made mine out of 1" diameter aluminum bar.

I found that the tank dampers mount on the head of a 5/16 allen hd bolt.
You'll need 1 long bolt to thru the spacer, frame and thread into half the other spacer.
You'll need 1 short bolt with just enough threads to secure the bolt to the spacer for mounting the damper.

Position the tank where you want it.
Slip the spacers and dampers in and mark the frame.
Remove all and drill the frame and mount the spacers.

The GZ tank really doesn't give enough more room to justify the work involved. That GS850 tank shows some promise; its big! I wonder how that would look on a Savage.
With that storage box on my bike and a little wider bars; it might not look out of place.

Looking at that GS850...  wow! 5.8 gal?  and I only see fuel holes on the one side? Does it have a fuel pump in the tank to pump gas from one side to the other?
Guess i'll have to do some reading Smiley sure would like to have a bigger tank on the wife's bike. My ninja 300 has 4.5 gal... and goes quite a ways.

Think of it as you "2nd reserve".  When you switch to reserve and then run out again......you can lean the bike over to the left side and get another pint of fuel to flow over from the right side of the tank! Smiley

MM, I had a GS850
You don't want it
it is a solid, reliable bike, but don't ever have to do the carbs, getting them back on the bike is a nightmare
Valve adjustments are shim over bucket, which ain't bad, and they are easy to access
The tank doe not have a fuel pump, it sits high enough it doesn't need one
the biggest problem is, it's beared way too low, and the only way to change gearing is another final drive off (IIRC) a GS 100 or 1100
Engine does sound nice at slower speeds, though, a nice growl rather than the shreik a twin cam I 4 makes

Old Rider has the best idea , 4.5 gal. and a motor that doin't use much !  Smiley

My brothers boy wants to sell me his GS-500 so he can get some 600cc class water cooled scream machine.

It might happen ???   Its 4.? gal and 65 ish mpg.

Next time I have the S-40 tank off I'll be measuring and mapping it , the Softail tank is 5.? gal and looks good but I need to flip one of them upside down without spending $200.oo .   Might have to visit a shop or two .  Wink

Jed hasn't completely crashed up the GS500 yet?  I would bet that you can get a lot of used parts for it on eBay - but most likely little of the bodywork survives intact.  I am sure the GS500 is a fun bike....my little Ninja is half the size and still a lot of fun.
