If you follow the load path....the only load the bearing sees is on the inner bearing races, the tightening just clamps them together tighter. You will never be able to tighten the axle enough to squeeze the bearing races into submission.
There have bee a few fellows who left out the spacer in the pulley hub when they put their bike back together (the spacer easily falls out when you set the pulley down on the floor), and when they tightened their axle the clamping force now goes through the bearings.....and bearing failure does happen relatively quickly.
Seriously....you didn't hurt anything - don't worry about it and just enjoy your ride!
