Over torqued rear axle
05/23/16 at 17:39:52

So I was doing some maintenance on the s40 the other day and I may have over torqued the rear axle by about 15 foot pounds extra. I set my torque wrench at 65 foot pounds and there was something wrong with it because it did not click so I kept on going until I realised wow, that's quite a bit of force.
Can over torquing by this much damage the rear hub assembly?

No, it is a pretty beefy bolt with fine threads.

Back it back down to what it should be, and don't worry about it.

I'm not worried about the bolt, I'm more worried about clamping down too hard on the rear wheel/pulley/brake and screwing the aluminum.

I lifted the back of my bike into the air with a breaker bar trying to loosen the factory torqued rear axle nut.  Wink

Kris,
That is about what I have found with Zukis factory settings. They seem to be very enthusiastic about tightening stuff. Smiley

Yep.

I even tried an impact wrench and it wouldn't touch it! It took lots of patience and strength in the end!

So how did you loosen it? Heat?

Simple perseverance! The breaker finally did it.

So I'm guessing these things are super tough.

Well, I'm sold, I didn't break it.

Yeah, it's pretty durable. The axle takes a beating.

In theory what would you booger up first, the axle or the the wheel?

I would guess the threads on the axle then maybe the wheel bearings might complain a few miles down the road. This is only a guess though.

As long as you loosened it back down to factory specs, you should be ok. I don't think just over torquing it would hurt anything if the threads are still good.
