Chimp,

Dime City has a real bargain on that carburetor. If we had a bike that you could easily pull the carb off to tune it I would be in for it in a New York Minute.

With my limitations on skill, if I decide to go with the VM 36 I think I will pay the money that Lancer wants since his setup is pretty well thought out.

In fact at the moment I am looking to find an adapter to use Lancer's carb and the Suzuki factory air box and filter.

Before I part with $400 bucks I have been working on the standard POS carburetor and have it working so good I am reluctant to get rid of it now.

I find that the factory carb likes very minute changes, not any big change at one time. I rode for over an hour this morning on rural roads, never getting beyond fourth gear, or over 45 MPH, and didn't hear a solitary pop or after fire. I gassed up at the end of my ride and checked my mileage and I am now up to 47.65 MPG, which is the best in the past 12 months of checking MPG.

Time will tell.       Undecided

not trying to undercut Lancer, I'm strictly a know-nothing from carbs, the price seemed too good to not say something.  I've got an older Honda V-twin this may work on. Cheers! Cool

Chimp,

If you have the patients to tune a carburetor from scratch the Dime City sale carb is the way to go.

I have heard that they can be helpful with the cable and any adapters that you will need.

That is an OK price on the carb - you can get them other places for that price year round.  Dime City is not known of low prices - but they do have a lot of things you can't get anywhere else.

Most of the jets are correct on the carb Dime City is selling - but you most likely will have to change the pilot and main to suite your bike  The needle jet, jet needle and slide are also correct- and those are expensive to change.  You have to be careful, as some of these carbs are jetted for 2 stroke bikes and the slide, needle jet and jet needle can be completely wrong for the Savage.

To make this carb work you need the proper rubber spigot clamp for the cylinder, a throttle cable that fits the carb and the Savage throttle.  I do believe the stock air filter boot will connect right up......but I don't know that for certain.

Dave,

When I chatted recently with Lancer he told me "The VM carburetor has a 63mm outside diameter on the intake side, while the stock carb is 57mm, so the stock rubber tube between carb and air box with not work."

So I am trying to figure out how to make a transition piece between the VM and the factory air box.

If anyone has done this please post how you did it, and the results.

The air box also has a 63mm nipple or 2.48"

just go ask for a 2 1/2" radiator hose.

Verslagen,

Thank You!

Is there more than one thickness of radiator hose made in this day and age?

as long as you get thick reinforced hose, you should be fine.
You can also get 2.5" metal tube and just use rubber on the ends.

I will stop at one of the auto supply places next week and look over what they have.

I haven't changed a radiator hose since somewhere in the early 1960's.

I had a Supertrapp  with 14 disks, stage 1 cam, K/N air filter, a mistake, IMO, but I got 48 mpg. Daughter got 51. And that's scootin bacjroads and in town.  I did increase the airbox volume a bit.

I guess the reason I was confused is that I used the rubber air box tube when I mounted my carb from Lancer - but I guess I turned it around and used the wide end of the carb....and I cut the small end off and inserted a piece of PVC pipe to mount my foam filter on.

It may be possible to get 2 of the factory tubes, cut them in half so you can use both big ends, and insert a small piece of tubing between them as a connector.  Super glue work very on rubber.

There s a bit of an angle needed in the tube between the carb and the air box.....so a thick radiator hose may not work.

If you need extra rubber tubes to cut up to make the hookup between the VM carb and the air box let me know, I have a spare, maybe 2.
I like the idea Dave had.

Lance,

I too like Dave's idea.

With a piece of tubing in the middle, and one of the 2 rubber pieces held fast with a hose clamp and free to slide, should make getting the carburetor easier to get off and on.

If I decide to get the VM setup I will mention on the order about acquiring a spare tube if you have it.
