Cam chain adjuster modification/extension
05/04/16 at 00:34:43
Does anyone know if it is possible to weld the extension onto the cam chain adjuster as per the Versy modification using an electric stick welder? I saw somewhere that the preferred method is a MiG welder using Argon shielding. None of that means anything to me but I do have a normal stick welder!!!

Stick welder is fine. It's what I used.

Thanks Gizzo. Any particular or special rods? Or do normal general purpose rods do the job?

A 6013 would probably be OK and they are available at most farm stores etc. Here is a good reference you can download.

Thanks Engineer - and probably the lightest gauge rod I can find to keep the current and thus the heat down

I did mine with an oxy acetylene torch. Prefer it over my stick welder for fine stuff but I'm real old school.

Ed. Did you reharden and temper after welding? I don't have an oxy but aren't too bad with the stick welder! Looks like there are lots of people out there who have done this mod themselves? Would be interesting to see pictures of the results!

Just used a mild steel welding rod. Some 2.5mm blue thing. I used a little scrap of 3mm steel welded to the tip of the real adjuster, ground it flat, drilled and called it good.
Here's a link to a build log that shows it just the way I did it. Post 17 for the pics.
