For what it is worth.

If I was going to do any serious touring I would add an auxiliary fuel tank that held about the same amount of fuel as the factory Savage/S40 tank.

When I would get to 100 miles I would stop, stretch my legs, and switch over to the auxiliary tank.

If you set it up to run off of only one tank at a time there would be none of the problems associated with two tanks, such as one tank feeding into the other tank, etc.

My 2 cents worth.

I've had a busy weekend .   Our CMA group did a benefit run for St.Judes Saturday  then the cornbread feastistible two county's over   (about 270 miles) , Friday was a busy day too.  Then Sunday was my turn to "come-up with a lesson" at Church .   been a busy + fun weekend !    Did win a "Door Prize" $25.oo gift card

MM, curiosity has gotten the best of me.  How much oil did you consume on that day?

Best I can tell , "Roy" didn't use any oil ... but he's only got 26,000 + miles .  Wink

Did any body get a count on about how many miles we rode once we got to Texas ?  Huh
I would guess maybe ??? 150 - a day ??

This is from a guy here on the site and I don't know if he is still around.  His sign on was Jack 650.

Best regards,

I couldn't see the image , but a "Taller" fuel tank should fit just fine.   I've been using my Garmin mounted in the middle of the handlebars for a speedometer because the Kawasaki sprocket makes the factory speedometer wrong anyway , so doing away with the factory speedometer would be OK.  Wink  might miss my neutral light and turn signal reminders a little ??   Undecided
Anybody found a longer speedometer cable ?  Huh  ??? should probely ask that in a different thread ...  Tongue

MM,

Ryca has a longer speedometer cable.

If you live anywhere near an old time speedometer shop they will make you a cable using the threaded ends from your existing cable. Cheap too.

I'll have to search for it, but there's another bike we've gotten it from before.

Jack_650 has a softail tank on his. He will be the one to tell you what is necessary for it to fit.

For the speedo cable, get a tach cable for Suzuki GT750. It is a direct swap and is long enough for the speedometer reposition.

In regards to the soft tail tank, look for the carbed version or you'll have to deal with the FI pump in the tank.

Since we've had good luck with adapting the Kawasaki tanks over... I think a police special K1000 tank would be a better fit.

Thank you guys for the recognition of my foolishness. In all honesty I must add details of my ''weekend''.
Friday- 600 miles Palm Beach County to Columbia SC
Sat, Sun about 50 miles running around Columbia and 2 full days sitting watching a Roller Derby tournament.
Monday overnight and Monday- Columbia to N. Ga. and into N.C. riding twisties.
Tuesday- 670 miles home
So it was not a true 2 day weekend, it was basically 3 days of riding with 2 days of sitting/cheering/yelling in between.
But the best part is they will have playoffs there in Sept. so I'll get to do it again. I don't look at a long ride to get there as a drag, I look at it as a chance to ride my bike ALL DAY!
Now let's see about that notice of a class reunion in Western NY in July, got to get that Yamaha 4.2 gal tank on.....

Hey MM, You said you were going 100 miles or so between fill-ups, what is the most you have gone before hitting reserve? I get 4.4 gals to reserve with a raptor, doesn't leave you much of a cushion.  In N. Ga I get the best mileage for some reason, went 155 miles (gps) fore I hit reserve once. I drive slower than most guys here I gather witch helps. Coming home it took 2.588 gallons once to fill-up, that was cutting it close, but mid-day weekday all stations are open, hell I had what, 10 more miles fore I had to push?
Like I said above, got to get that bigger tank on!

OK.....I'll ask the obvious question.  How do you fit 4.4 gallons into a tank that holds 2.8 gallons?
