Got my very first bike (2001 LS650)
04/20/16 at 09:53:38

Howdy everyone,

I just picked up my very first bike, a LS650 from 2001 in the Metallic Glacial Blue color. When I picked it up, it was very rough... missing parts, dents, broken everything, and it barely ran. The battery was resting on a piece of wood and zip tied to stay in!

After a couple weeks of searching and tinkering, I've since replaced all the turn signals, headlight with bracket, installed a factory ignition (a cheap aftermarket one had been installed into the left side cover), new gas cap, new speedometer, new air filter, new intake boot, cleaned carb, new oil filter, Raptor petcock, front break pads, break fluid, and of course some fresh Rotella T6!  Wink

She's come a long way but I still have a few things to do including:

Verslavy cam chain adjuster and head plug
Replace or repair seat
Track down a decent backrest for the passenger seat
Fix all the squeaks and rattles  Grin

Here's how she sits now:

And on to the questions since this is the Rubber Side Down board...

Am I missing anything?
Is there anything I should look at considering appearance, reliability, and most importantly safety?

Any and all input is much appreciated! Before a couple weeks ago, I had never owned, let alone, worked on a bike!

Hey,

welcome to the thumper club ...

I think I watched that bike on craigslist for MONTHS ...
believe the original listing was: the bike "fell" and was leaking from the lower, left case, around the foot peg ...
dude was a real pain via email ...

If it's the same bike ... looking at your new ride, you got it looking better than the listing ... great job ...

Thanks for the welcome! I'm excited to have joined. This forum helped so much when working on the bike.

In regards to the craigslist ad, it sounds like the same bike! I haggled with the guy and ended up buying it for $500

It was the janky'ist thing I've ever seen but hey, it's lookin alright now and she's all mine!

looking over your pics, it is the same bike.

I tried haggling/barter and CASH, I know it had to have been laid down or beat 2 $#it by a pissed off ex ...  Grin

dude was firm on his original asking price. I was at $800 and you SCORED at $500 ... plus you got it looking way better than he had it listed, "janky'ist", is as close to a term I would use ...   Grin

I was going to tear it down and use it as a donor for a bobber.

Haha too funny! I guess he just needed the cash. Apparently he had just purchased a replacement daily driver and was probably sick of it.

As a side note, I have about 20 hours into it so far. I'm definitely taking my time with it but it's paying off!

I plan on getting it close to factory original as possible. I'm not really sure why, but I've always been a purist!

Howzatt work iggzaklee? A Purist, running a Raptor domesticated male chicken and a Verslavy?

Just noticed a situation that requires immediate demerits, and yes, that's Multiple Demerits..
Way too much stuff stacked around the fridge. Beer access is Not to be restricted. Every purist knows that.

Well aesthetically I'd like it to look original. Mechanical improvements don't count!  Grin

Edit:

Tis but a dishwasher, not a fridge   Roll Eyes

The fridge is on the other side... with easy access!

Welcome! I like that color! How may miles on it? The stock cam chain tensioner will last around 10K miles or so. If you're close to that (not knowing how she's been ridden in the past) you would do well to pull the cover and check it before it grenades.  Wink

thearizonacowboy,

if you need help wrenching, holler ... I'm free most weekends, if I don't have school projects. But finals are coming up, so I may be tied up for the next few ...

It's got about 12,800 miles on her so it's definitely time to do the tensioner swap. Thanks for the link!

@DesertRat I appreciate the offer, I may take you up on that. Do you go ASU? I'm in Mesa off the 202
