Looking for mud guard suggestions
04/17/16 at 19:16:02
Today I spent some time picking gravel and tar out of the engine cooling fins. It got there when I rode on freshly chip and sealed back roads last fall. The front tire throws it up on the engine. The county just sent out a bulletin that they plan to continue the chip and seal program this spring.
So I am thinking of some sort of guard on the rear of the front fender. Somebody did a nice job of installing one and posted a picture and I think they even mentioned where they got the hardware but I can't find that thread now. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There is a product called Fenda Extenda that is a molded plastic piece to lengthen the front fender. Unfortunately I don't see one that is made for the Savage (no surprise).
http://shop.fendaextenda.com/category.sc;jsessionid=481BB22E33D51B803BFE85720...
I just ordered one for my new Honda NT700, and I included a note that asked how to get one to fit the Savage fender. I will try the one I get and see if it can be used on the Savage.
Other than that you can just by some floor mat material and cut it to fit.....MMRanch and Serowbot have it on their bikes.
Another option is to fit the an alternate front fender that is bigger - but you would either have to paint it to match, or get one that is chrome. The Kawasaki KZ750 fender adds more protection and is easy to adapt, the Honda Goldwing fender offers more protection and is a bit harder to adapt.

How pretty CAN a mudflap be? I think it's a thing of beauty.
However, now is the time for evaluating the function.
Would you wish it was longer or wider?
You can build one that is gawky looking andas protective as a windscreen, trim until it is acceptable..

Serowbot's mud flap is along the lines of what I may make but that fenda extenda looks really nice. I'm thinking that I'll go to the local dealer and take some measurements of fenders on the bikes that they do make extenders for and see if any of them are close enough to fit the Savage.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Protecting the engine doesn't take a lot, but the feet, on a wet road, take a hosing. A wider at the bottom design might perform better.

Yeah, probably. It's maybe not doable. Low enough to help might be something that would hang up on a speed bump.

How about a plastic dirt bike fender? Stiff enough to hold it shape under normal riding yet flexiable if you hit a speed bump. Pick the front or back tip ,thatever fits the best an threw bolt it to the bottom of your stock fender ,if it's some weird color grab a can of flat black and spray it.

If you can find a foot of Hay Baler Belt it would make a dandy mud flap , my baler came with 5" wide belt , but I've been replacing them with 8" wide as they tear-up . Some dealerships sell them by the foot off a big roll, tractor supply sells them in 15 foot strips.
