many have wired incorrectly
Probably meant
may have wired incorrectly
And, considering the
New to bikes
First big build
I would have a hard time arguing with your best guess.
Probably wired wrong.
Did the old ones work?

Are the new lights LED rather than filament bulbs?
If so....you will need to change the flashing unit to a solid state flasher. You need a "2-wire" solid state flasher....you can get one at just about any auto store that is universal - you will probably have to modify the wires to fit the flasher unit as the stock one has a clip that is specific to that flasher.

they are not led
you have any other ideas you'll just have to ask if it is possible and don't forget to punctuate

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!
