2009 S40 looses power after refill
03/30/16 at 18:07:37

Hello,

Here is when it happens.
1. Bike is running fine. It reached almost empty tank. No problem so far.
2. I refill bike to full tank and go home - ride about 2 miles. Still no problem.
3. Next morning for first few miles it intermittently looses power .... even stops while at 25-30 miles speed.
4. After few hick-ups/power losses ... it runs fine again (about 1-2 miles of bumpy ride).
5. It runs fine till it reach empty tank and refilled.
6. It runs fine if it is refilled every 70 miles.

So Problem happens only when it is almost empty and refilled.

What can be the problem ? Dirt/Water -- How to drain the dirt out ?

Thanks !!

Year model, miles.
Stock petcock?
I'm tempted to question the tank cap vent. A full tank develops low pressure more quickly than a low tank.
Pop the cap and see how it acts. If it runs okay a while, then starts acting up, pop the gas cap, if it runs okay a while, then acts up... bingo.

Have you installed an inline fuel filter?

Dave,

No, I haven't installed inline filter.
Is it worth it ?

I read couple of posts and got lost as what is best.

If its an easy job I can install it. Which one is the best?

Thanks

No....an inline filter is not recommended.  They can cause "air lock" problems and cause the running symptoms you are currently having.  The bike already has screens on the petcock, and another on the top of the needle valve seat.

You've got one, working out, cool. The petcock has a screen.
It's, IMO, unnecessary, redundant, restrictive.
Has been shown to be problematic.
Considering the reported Symptoms, I would tend to lean away from the filter, I know, it doesn't have one, But, if it did, the Full tank has higher head pressure. And, the Full tank requires less change in fuel level to change the internal pressure.
I'm stuck on a vent..

That's a different story, and, might I add, a
Detail omitted from the post. And a not exactly inconsequential detail. You moved the filtration device. You can't say that you simply added one. Scraping a star off your chart.

Some folks have used them without issue....others haven't and have had problems.  The issue is that the plastic nipples on the filter are thick for strength, and it makes the hole that the fuel flows through very small and restrictive.  Sometimes air bubbles get trapped in that small hole and won't let the fuel flow past (air lock).

The Tech Article is here......HondaLavis had one on his bike and it was working for short rides - then his bike started acting up on long rides....so he removed it.  Other folks have also had problems with the filters and chased all kinds of ignition and electrical problems that didn't really exist.

I'm running BOTH, did NOT remove the filter mesh on the petc0ck.

I was addressing the issue brought up that there's already a "filter/mesh" on the petc0ck. IF one were to remove the redundancy from the petc0ck (mesh), an external filter would be "okay" and necessary.

Mine works with BOTH installed. I don't care if others have "issues" with my setup, I found one that works in my situation and will continue to ride as is ... ain't skeered ...  Wink
