It should be an even swap after shipping. The S40 light was in way better shape (almost new) than the Marauder. It is rusted and pitted, gotta paint it now.

now to take it back off and paint it satin black like the rest of my tins  Shocked

Maybe you should ride it an night before you take it apart....and confirm that it works better than the original one!

Although.....with a 7" bucket you can find other reflectors to fit in the housing.  If you can find a 7" Cibie or Hella E-Code reflector, and install a Silverstar.....you will be very happy!

I do very little night riding, anywhere from 1-3 times a week for the commute. Have you run that combo? Is there a noticeable difference? If so, there wouldn't happen to be a thread around here that has more data?

No....this kind of light.

Here is the US version which is DOT.  The lens has a flatter cut off on both sides.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HELLA-7-Vision-Plus-176mm-High-Low-Beam-12V-Halogen-C...

If you can find an E-Code version....the light on the right side of the bulb has a higher vertical cut off on low beam - which lights up road signs better than the DOT version.

And have I used them?  Yes - but not for a while.  When I had cars and motorcycles with sealed beam headlights - this was the upgrade to get a light that had a bulb that could be replaced...rather than replacing the entire sealed beam unit.  The lens is much better glass than the old sealed beams, and the light pattern is better.  And we would install bulbs that had 60W/100W bulbs......that is probably not an option on the Savage since the entire charging system is only about 100 watts.  Halogen bulbs had not yet made it to headlight use - so Silverstar and other brighter bulb were not available....a brighter light required more watts.

The first one you listed is the correct E-Code light - but it is used and has a bit of rust on the back.

The second one you listed looks to be new - but I can't tell for sure if the light is E-Code.  Since I can't see DOT anywhere in the photos...and it has that disclaimer on it....it could be an E code light.  (Instead of DOT it has an E on the lens.

The third one won't do you any good....it is a cover for a Mercedes and the lens won't fit anything.

You also need to confirm the Marauder headlight accepts this "standard" form of headlight assembly.  There are some locating tabs that align the assembly in the bucket.....look at the back of the light and see if it matches what you have on your Marauder headlight.

Thanks for the insight Dave. Will continue the hunt.

Do you have a part # for the Sylvania bulb?

Go to any autoparts store, Walmart, etc.  They will have a rack with headlight bulbs...you want the one that is listed as 9003/H4.

The Ultra is the lower entry level bulb, has a tad brighter light than a stock bulb, and it has a pretty long life.  (This is the one I use in my car as it will last several years).

The Silverstar is brighter, has a faint blue coating on the bulb, is brighter/whiter that the stock bulb, and has a reasonable life (but I barely get a year from them on my car and they burn out).  This is the bulb that I use in my motorcycles, where the limited life isn't an issue....I buy the 2 pack and keep the extra bulb in the tool kit.

They make a Silverstar zXe that has a purple coating....and it is a fashion statement....any bulb with a coating is filtering out parts of the light spectrum that can help you see - you are far better off with a bulb that is clear.  The blue tint filters out parts of the spectrum that helps you see tan/brown - which is the color of the deer hiding in the bushes waiting to sprint out into the roadway.

They also make a Silversar Xtravision - but I have never bought it as I anticipate the life to be very short.
