Making a trade for a 87 Savage 650, should I?
03/23/16 at 10:52:51

I have a 81 Honda Xr500 that I am talking to a guy about trading for a 1987 Savage 650, I'll put the ad below...

I've always liked the big single thumper and that this bike has been around so long. I have the itch to ride on the street again and this bike drew me in, especially since it will be a straight up trade. It looks good and it's got a title. He says it runs fine and everything works, just that the starter is bad. After reading around this forum last night I see that the pre 93 bikes are notorious for bad starters and tearing themselves up. It makes me a little nervous now, but should I be? The guy says he rides it nearly everyday with a push start. I don't mind putting a little into it for the starter if everything else checks out.

I'm going to look at it tonight and hopefully hear it run and ride it. What should I know? What should I look for? Is this a potential for the starter gear and case problems that i've read about? Or will I be ok? Any other issues I should be aware of?

I see that this is a strong community with a time tested bike so I appreciate any information or opinions. Having a place like this will definitely make me feel easier about possibly owning this bike if it all works out.

Thanks

Very tough to answer
when a bike won't start, you have no way of knowing if ANY of the running gear is any good
It might need a starter
it might need a starter, piston, cylinder hone, transmission, new frame, and more
I don't buy (or trade for) ANYTHING I can't ride unless it's really really cheap, as in, I could put a motor in it and still come out ahead
OTOH, it might really just need a starter
if he can push start it for you, and it runs and rides OK, it might be worth it

Not worth $1000
tank is dented both sides, problem with seat, maybe split.
runs... ok
but starter bad, could be hiding bad starter gear or busted case.
but could be simply a bad relay or other electrical issue.
$500 would be my top offer and after looking it over I might walk away.
