Cost of friction plate replacement?
03/18/16 at 19:05:40

im a newb with bikes and not a wrench. Found an '04 S40 with "low miles".  It says "needs new friction plate set for clutch". What should I expect to be charged by my local Suzuki shop for such a job? Also, what should be the typical mileage before the clutch plates are replaced? Any other advice would be appreciated unless it is for me to do it myself. Tia

Dude, do it yourself.

And who Said it needs a clutch job?
People are forever diagnosing
Blown head gasket.
It's a rubber plug.
Needs a clutch.
Ran the wrong oil.
Might need flushed
Might need Scrubbed
Someone May have opened up the throttle and
Gassed it while it was slipping.
Yeah, JJ, still waiting to hear how you're doing.

How many miles on it?
Look at the clutch cover
Check the lever and the marks.

Got slack in the clutch lever? Need a bit of wiggle there.

If someone used an energy conserving car oil in the bike, the clutch WILL slip. You may need to just clean the plates. Open it up and look at the clutch. If the friction plates look thick but glossy, you've found your problem. If they are thin and worn out, you've found the other side of the problem.

The group here can walk you through every step of opening it up if you need help.  Wink

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Start with the inspection. The clutch Cable, clutch actuator arm/ marks on the case.
If that's all good, drain the oil, get a coupla filters, and get some
Rotella T 15/40
One gallon,at least.

Someone who has been Really paying attention to the consequences of using a
Fancy , Expensive , Friction Modifying oil in a wet clutch
May suggest something added to the oil to help flush stuff out of the clutch.

Unless someone on this forum, not a Suzuki owner or mechanic, told you that you need to replace the clutch, don't believe them.
We've seen Suzuki mechanics destroy engines putting the oil filter in wrong.
Seen professional mechanics diagnose head gaskets, phhht.. wrong.

Motrctyman,

JOG is right, you may not need any parts other than oil and filters.

With the pictures and advice on this site you will be able to repair your bike, if needed, without too much trouble.

What is "low mileage" ?

I've only replaced one motorcycle clutch - my Vulcan Nomad - and clutch friction plates, clutch spring, gasket, and fresh DOT4 for the hydraulics cost right around $100. I probably could have replaced just the spring, but at 45,000 miles I thought new plates was cheap insurance.
