Whats Wrong with My Bike!?
03/16/16 at 07:25:22

Alright so I bought a LS650 Savage last summer from National Power Sports. I was super excited because it was my first motorcycle and I wanted to get out on the road ASAP! I rode the bike for a week with no problems at all, but then a squeak sound started happening. it sounded like it was coming from the drive belt or pulley, so i took it back to the dealer and they looked over it. They found a small pebble in the belt that was creating a small hole. They replaced the Belt and Pulley.

Awesome, no more problems. At least thats what I thought.

towards the end of the summer the same squeak started AGAIN! Angry
I took it out for the first ride of this year about 3 days ago and there wasn't any squeak but after about 35 minutes of riding it slowly started coming back.

The squeak only happens when i accelerate. when i come off the throttle there is no squeak. when i am idling there is no squeak. ONLY when i pull down on the throttle.

Does anyone have any idea whats going on? Obviously the mechanics over at Power Sports didn't fix it, so I need you guys' help, the real experts!!

if you have any questions please feel free to ask. i need this squeak gone, its louder than my stock exhaust pipe Embarrassed

I rode for about 2 hours and the first 35 minutes there was no squeal, but after that it became more noticeable as my ride time increased. by the time i made it back to my house it had gotten pretty loud

The belt is noisy,... making it completely quiet is an art... but it can be done...

My guess is the belt is too tight...
Dealer adjustment is tighter than a 90lb bowstring... Roll Eyes
This becomes even tighter, when you put a riders weight on the suspension...

start with belt tension, then do alignment and see how it goes...

You need to fix the bike first, and then go for a long ride.  Your mind will be clearer afterwards, and you essay will most likely write itself. Wink

I would guess you are hearing standard belt chirp/queak.  My wife's S40 does the same thing.  When we bought it, it was quiet but you could play a tune on that belt.  I adjusted it using the twist method and now it chirp especially when you are on the gas.

Wait till you ride in the rain.
Much has been written on the subject.
Hours of piddling to learn how.
I used Gulf canning wax rubbed on the edges of teeth on the belt. Works okay, but wax gets tossed out and on the rim. Which I preferred to the squealing.
Wax, from the grocery store, canning supplies.

alright so i loosened the belt using the twist method and so far the squeak is much much quieter!  Grin i can only hear it chirp when i take off from first gear and a little chirp when i hit second and third.

is there anything else that i can do to help eliminate the squeak, at least a little more? i read somewhere on here that someone put rubber grease on a few teeth of  their belt and it eliminated the squeak. would it be worth trying this?

Thanks for all the help so far, you guys are life savers!!!

Grease on the belt will end up covering the entire bike. Well, everywhere except the belt!  Grin

Yep....that is Serowbot's method.  He took an angle grinder and just made a slight bevel to the teeth.  When the teeth contact the sprocket and roll down into the bottom of the groove - the can slide along the outside edge of the sprocket.  Beveling the belt stops the edges of the teeth from contacting the edge of the sprocket.

You might also try aligning the belt in the rear sprocket so it is centered.  Whichever side of the pulley the belt is touching - loosen the other side of the axle tensioner 1/4 turn at a time until the belt is centered.  It may take a few tries to get it right.

you will have to take a short ride after each adjustment to see where the belt actually centers
Or you can roll it forward
But who wants to push a running bike?  Grin
