Emblem / Badge removal & 3M tape?
03/13/16 at 14:49:26

How do I get this 3M tape residue off the tank?

I've tried soap & water, sanding (which leaves high/low spots and the residue still hanging on  Angry  ) and soaked the side cover tins in mineral spirits for hours and they finally scrubbed down to bare metal and primer.

That leaves the TANK. Which I do not have enough paint thinner left or a container large enough to let soak.

How do I get this 3M tape residue off the tank?

Cheesy

The auto paint stores sell "adhesive remover", and it will dissolve the glue.  I think Goo Gone also works...and WD40 might as well.

I have a big rubber erasor that goes into a drill that is made for removing stickers and the 2 sided foam tape.

thanks Dave. I've used 3M branded remover before and the drill mounted rubber eraser type, but I have neither.

The WD40 soak and a razor blade worked. So now time to degrease and sand the tank.  Cheesy

Dave's right (as usual). GooGone works pretty good. You don't even really have to scrub it.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

One of our local dealers has a used 2014 S40 with the tank emblems removed.
Not a mark on the paint, don't know what was used but it must be simple.

By the way only 3900 miles on it. Don't know what they are asking but more than likely too much. :'(

the razor did scrape the clear coat. No biggie, since I'm sanding and repainting.  Cheesy

Norm,

I used fishing twine and GoofOff and there are no abrasions on my tank.

I did leave the bike sit in the hot Texas sun, on a 100 degree day, for an hour before I started.

I pulled the bike in the garage after using the fishing twine and I then waited until the tank cooled off to clean with the GoofOff.
