A 31 year old dream about to become reality
03/10/16 at 05:08:45

Hi Folks,
I have been motorcycling ever since I was 18 I'm nearing the Mid century now & the bike I owned (Suzuki VS1400 Intruder) was starting to feel a wee bit on the heavy side. So I finally sold it last year. Anyway to cut a long story short I have always liked (and wanted) a Suzuki LS650 Savage, ever since I first clapped eyes on one at a Bike Rally in the mid eighties. I have finally managed to find and put my deposit down on an imported S40 Boulevard (You can't get 'em over here in the UK anymore). Looking forward to collecting her in a month or so. I just wanted to ask you guys if there are any particular do's & don'ts with this particular bike? All advice will be gratefully received.

In particular, Any comments on the following:- Fuel supply (there is a replacement fuel tap on ebay, any good?), cam chain tensioner (I have heard that the original ones are weak & burn out?) & aftermarket exhausts (Do Non-standard exhausts cause misfires & bad running?) Plus any other advice a (noob/old flake) such as myself can take on board. Thanks NazNomad. Grin

Here is a link to the thread that discusses the basic info.  Buy a genuine Yamaha petcock....not the Chinese copes.  If you don't see a Yamaha part number on a white box....keep looking until you find someone with the factory part.

The stock muffler is very quiet, and does a good job controlling the backfires and popping.  When you add a DYNA muffler or a similar muffler, it does not mask the noise as well.  Proper jetting can help to reduce frequency and make them a bit less loud, and keeping the idle speed up a little bit also helps by allowing a bit more fuel to flow when the throttle is closed - but the way your ride the bike also makes a big difference.  Don't allow the throttle to close completely when you shift or when you are decelerating...hold the throttle open slightly and the bike will make a lot less noise out the muffler.

The cam chain tensioner is not weak....it just doesn't have enough travel and can come apart when you reach the travel limit.  Verslagen has a tensioner modified that will not come apart and provide a second hole so you can use up all the cam chain life.

The rubber head plug is also a weak spot.....and oil leaks from the plug are common.  Verlsagen makes and aluminum replacement that will solve that problem (when) it occurs on your bike.

NazNomad,

First, WELCOME to the forum.

Is this bike "NEW"? as in 0 (zero) miles from the factory/dealership? If so, you may not see those issues described until after riding awhile. By then, you will have been hanging around on this forum long enough to have read about all the "issues" that should be addressed.

Plus, you'll have access to the greatest minds behind Suzuki Savage maintenance, repairs and work-arounds.  Wink

Where did you import it from? As you may be aware, there are several UK owners on this forum and there is a member locator map.

The bike I'm buying is already imported it is on an 05 plate it has done 26k miles looks like it has a non standard silencer She has had 3 owners two of which were the same lady so really I will be the third owner since registered in UK. I noticed it had a rubber stopper in the cylinder head. So I will be purchasing the lovely modded parts offered by Verslagen (assuming he has stock?). I am looking at collecting the beast over easter Smiley then I will spend lots of time riding to see how she runs.

Got a fuel tap via boats.net here
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/outboard/Y-5LP-24500-01-00.html

I hope it's the correct one?
