With the shifter lever off it's a good time to drill and install a grease zert in it.

A grease zert (or "zerk," as I've also seen) is a fitting that mates to a standard grease gun. This allows for quick lubricatio without dismantling a mechanical assembly (auto drive shaft U-joints, for example).
