I'm older than I thought.  Undecided  I've always had standard (naked) motorcycles. Windshield and crash bars (with foot pegs) added for long trips. Luggage etc. sat on rear seat and tail light brace attached to sissy bar with bungee cords    I never had a pair of saddlebags until the set that came with this bike.     I DID almost buy a CB1100 a few months ago until the family CFO pointed out that we need some new floor coverings....... Embarrassed

Been looking at a few gs500 for my offspring's boyfriend. They're nice, in a simple, bombproof kind of way. We should be able to get a mint, low km one for around 3.5k. If he doesn't blow his wad on something stupid. We're looking at doing a quick neo-cafe build for his first road bike.

SpringMan

My nephew has a GS500 (the one who went Dragon ridding with us).  He claims he has had it at 125 mph and get 55 mpg on local rides .   I'll bet if he get 55 then I would get 65 mpg (the young man rides like a bat out of is cage all the time ) !

Has anybody noticed Triumph is making standard motorcycles ? and Scramblers ,

Lucas, the prince of darkness

Surely they are not still on the BLINK system  ?    The Speed Master had my eye till I saw the Chain on the secondary drive !    But the Scrambler still makes me duel when I see one .  Roll Eyes

Probably they are not
Make no mistake, I LOVE standards, and I love the looks of the triumphs you mentioned, but I have been left on the side of the road by the price of darkness so many times I remain skeptical

I'm not sure if the POD is still alive, I have seen stuff made under the brand, but it's for 1950's - '80's English cars. I think the brand has been brought by someone. As far as I'm aware the POD started out as a lamp maker and gravitated to electrics, when kerosene lamps became unfashionable.

yup, they're beautiful too. A couple in the motorcycle parking at school. Spots are reserved for professors and I sneak in and park around all these new shiny bikes with my beat up dirty savage.  Grin

DR.

I noticed your is an 06  ,  mine is an 05 with 23,000 + miles , not ragged out - but not new and scratch-less either !   I do  keep it clean (kinda)  Roll Eyes .

I'm sure it will be needing one of those super tough cam chains when they are available.   It already got  a version of the Versey adjuster but everything wears out sometime !

MMRanch, I JUST washed my bike a couple days ago, it's been MONTHS since she had a bath and I ride everyday. Now she's all taken apart ready for sanding and a new paint job.  Cheesy

I read a fairly comprehensive review/comparison between the Savage, the RE Thunderbird 500 and the Yamaha 500. There was graphs and all that happy stuff. Now I can't find it. I was fairly impressed with the fuel injected Thunderbird. It is the heaviest of the 3 but I wouldn't hold that against it. I just wish I could find that review again. They were all nice bikes.

Gus, I couldn't find a Yamaha cruiser at 500cc's -700cc ... their site doesn't list the Vstar 650

but did compare this:

Rat, your right about the Yamaha 400. That was an error on my part. I'll have to get on the desk top at home and try to find it again. That review was very informative; broken down into paragraphs about cornering, horsepower and what not. Comparing all three in every paragraph. It's unfortunate there are not mre singles to choose from.

How about the GR650? (Maybe known as Tempter in the US). The photo below is from 1987.

S40 vs (GR650):  air cooled single (air cooled twin), 23 kW (37), 50 Nm (51), wet wgt 173 Kg (197), wheelbase 1480 mm (1430), wire wheels (ditto), front tyre 100/90 x 19 (ditto), rear 140/80 x 15 (130/90 x 16).

The GR was sold from 1983, for only ~ 5 years in Aus. But they were a good honest cheap bike. I owned two, and clocked up 81,000 kms in total. If you could find one second hand now, I figure it would be very inexpensive.
