Not much of anything.....it was a re-branding name change thing.

There have been some changes in the bike along the way - but not all are related to the S40/LS650 change.

Changes in the order they come to my mind (not by year).
Removal of side stand indicator light in speedo.
Change from 4 speed to 5 speed.
Torgue limiter added to starter intermediate gear.
Seat pattern changed to basket weave.
Two piece seat changed to one piece seat.
Change from rear sissy bar.....to none.
Addition of passing light switch and 4 way flasher.
Turn signal housings changed from round to cone.
Mirror shape changed.

One thing I noticed too is the handle bars, and engine look.

Older modelsappear to have higher handle bars and an all chrome look to the engine, where newer models have a lower handle bar and the engine is part black.

I'm quite new to this but that's what I've noticed and helps me figure out if they call it savage, ls650, s40, and sometimes Boulevard  s40.

Yep....forgot.  Early bikes had "buckhorn" handlebars, later bikes had "risers and drag bars".

Engine color was changed from all silver, to silver case with black cylinder, and later black center cases and cylinder.

Actually, you could get early bikes with either buck horns or drag bars.
At least there's a part number for both.

Well if you all want to beat the winter blahs......Do you want to list the notable changes?

1986 - Drag Bars, 4 speed, kick stand indicator light in speedo.
1987 - Wiring Diagram
1988 -
1995 -Drag Bars or Buckhorns. Torque Limiter for starter. 5 speed. Wiring Diagram
1996 - Buckhorn Handlebars only. Wiring Diagram
1997 -
1998 -
1999 -
2000 -
2001 -
2002 - First year for basket weave pattern seat.
2003 -
2004 - New mirror shape changed, new turn signal shape, passing light switch and 4 way flasher switch added. Wiring Diagram
2005 - Switch back to Drag Bars. New 2 piece rocker arm design.
2006 -
2007 -
2008 -
2009 -
2010 -
2011 -
2012 -
2013 -
2014 -
2015 -
2016 -

Let me know what years:
The rear sissy bar stopped being standard.
The rear fender rails stopped having the sissy bar mount.
The sidestand indicator light in the speedometer went away.
The first year the chrome plated top yoke switched to being brushed aluminum (after 2002).
The first year the cylinder turned black.
The fist year the engine center case turned black.

Once we get the complete list.....it will be placed in the Tech Section for future reference.

added wiring diagram change for 1986, 1987-1994, 1995, 1996-2003 & 2004

and I believe the sissy bar change occurred with the re-branding in 2004.

and last year they modified the tab on the plunger of the cam chain adjuster to be smaller.

all changes could be tracked by p/n change in oem fishe by year.

Was there a change in the shape of the speedometer hole in the fuel tank, and/or the shape of the plastic shroud for the speedometer?
(RYCA lists 2 different shapes for their block off plate).

abd ask why, in a bike that's been a sales success for that long, they couldn't fix what one man working in his home workshop has
OTOH, they've helped versy grow a well deserved cottage industry, so it's all good

It's the cheap bean counters that are the problem. Why spend excessive R&D money for a decent tensioner on a throwaway bike?  Roll Eyes

what excessive R&D? Versy cut a slot and added a pin, it's not rocket science
And Suzuki has any number of other bike to borrow from
Honda rebels are throwaway bikes, too, but you don't have to re engineer parts to keep them from eating their motors

I was speaking from Suzuki's perspective.

For a bottom of the line bike, it ain't half bad. They got it working and sold it to the masses. What works...works! They're not going to re-engineer the bike if they don't have to. It's not a safety or warranty problem. It's just a problem for someone buying a used bike. I'd be willing to bet that most new owners are first-timers and won't keep the bike very long. They "throw it away" and upgrade to something bigger or faster.

Is the the cam chain tensioner you are referring to? I'm looking at a Savage and a S40 which is why I asked about the difference. They re both at Motorcycle Warehouse in Portland OR if anyone wants to look online. I would appreciate your input.

both the s40 and the ls650 are the same in this regard.
and suzuki suggests more maintenance than people actually do.
