jetting on standard setup, smell of gas at tailpip
02/01/16 at 08:04:22

hi guys and gals,  I have an 09 s40 , completely stock, there is a  smell of  fuel at the end of the exhaust. (some guys I ride with complain).  I have been checking out jet sizes here, but nearly all relate to modified exhausts.
I'm going to overhaul the carb, what jet sizes would anyone recommend other than orig, and what should I look for in the carb relating to the gassy smell prob.  thanks, and I have donated to the site.

Do you still have the stock vacuum petcock?  The diaphragm can do bad and let fuel flow down the vacuum lin - which makes the engine run too rich at all speeds.

The bike is never too rich with factory jetting.....so likely you either have the petcock problem, or somebody has already been in the carb (is the brass plug still over the idle mix screw)?

A good place to start trying new jetting is a #150 main, #50 pilot, and 3 washers (#4 machine screw) on the needle instead of the white spacer.

Test your petcock:

mine always smelled of gas a little, even with Raptor and stock jetting
not bad enough to cause complaints though

I only smell gas when it's cold and idling in the garage (door up) with the choke pulled. You should only smell gas if it's too rich. It runs richer with the choke pulled out.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

actually I would smell gas from it even not running
the non California models vent the tank to atmosphere, and if you have a sensitive sniffer you can absolutely smell it, but not to the point anyone would complain

the smell is not subtle and happens when riding. Even had my passenger remark on it.  Its embarrassing when riders behind complain. ( yes , I bathe on a regular basis  haha) Anyway,    I'll rejet and change the petcock

I have ridden behind a few bikes that were jetted too rich.....and it is very noticeable.

The fuel tank vent on my little Ninja whistles like a teapot when the bike is pulled out of the garage and the bike is sitting in the sun!

pull off the vac line to the carb, any gas in it?  bad petcock diaphragm, change immediately.  You're right at 7 years, it's aged out.

if you still have stock jets and your petcock is still good, it's either the float level too high, bad float or bad float valve.
