Low oil
01/30/16 at 09:22:03

Hi guys, first post here, sorry if I put it in the wrong spot, but didn't know where else I could ask this. I have an 06 s40, I got the chain adjuster, great by the way, but I'm afraid that I may have run the bike a little low on oil. Not very low, just below the window standing straight up. I always put motorcycle grade oil in, acounting for the wet clutch in there. But once I saw how low it was, I filled it with the nearest bottle of 10w40. Is what I did a huge issue? Or should I not worry about it? I know it's full now, I just did a change a few days ago. Thanks guys an gals.

Just below the window,.. is about a half quart, I think..
Yer' fine...
Keep an eye on the level,.. especially if you run a tankful at speeds over 65mph...
If the oil you topped up with, had friction modifiers, you may feel clutch slip... if you do,.. do an oil/filter change. (but,.. in a pinch, any oil is better than none, so you did right)...

Welcome,... happy trails... ride safe...

You posted the right place, btw... Wink

If you grabbed the nearest bottle of 10w-40 then it was probably not mc oil. You need to drain it and not run the engine until you put the correct stuff in. Energy conserving car oil will coat the clutch in "slippery stuff" and cause it to not grab. You WILL have problems!

This forum highly recommends Shell Rotella, either dyno or synth.

Thank you Serowbot. And just out of curiosity, say I didn't know if it was like that for I while. Like 100 miles or so? I'm just being real paranoid cause of it, if you know what I mean. I know the ls650 is bulletproof, but everything has a breaking point.

If it worries you,... drain it, get some Shell Rotella (sold by the gallon) and fill it up fresh.

If the oil you added said, "better economy" or "for older engines", or "friction modifiers"... it probably had additives you don't want...
If it was plain old 10w-40... you may just be a tiny bit low on zddp additive that our engines like.

I just filled it a few days ago, with castrol 2nd oil 10w40. When this happened it was a while back, and as soon as I got home it was swapped back to 2nd oil. My concern is just that I hope I didn't run it too low on oil for too long.

My son bought a used Ninja 250 off a girl this spring.  She assured him her Dad had just "serviced" it, oil change and chain adjustment.

Clutch started to slip real bad after about 20 miles.  I phoned her up and she said her Dad had put in some super duper synthetic stuff for oil.

Dumped the oil and filter, put in Rotella, drove about 5 miles, changed oil again and no slipping yet after 1400 miles.

Oldfeller had a thread where he used Rotella to clean out the gunk out of an old engine. It's good stuff. Stick with it!

Not all MC oil is acceptable......the modern fuel injected motorcycles have oxygen sensors, and the amount of ZDDP in the MC oils is being reduced.

So far....the V-twin 20W-50 oils are OK - but I am not sure how long that will continue as the Harley's are now fuel injected.  The Suzuki brand oils sold by the dealerships are not Ok....there is not enough ZDDP in it.

Bottom line: use Rotella
keep a quart with you for top ups, it doesn't take up much room in a saddlebag
