Fork boots defective?!
01/29/16 at 13:53:25

I just received my Daystar D83 fork boots. They don't seem as orderly and pretty as the others (58 Series) being all squished down if you know what I mean. Roll Eyes

What really got me concerned is when I felt around the circumference of the boots, I found that the rubber is actually thicker on one side than the other. I tried to put it off as being in the design, but when I found that both of them have this on opposite sides, I kinda threw out that idea.

I called Daystar, and he told me to call back Monday when the manager is there.

You know what will happen.... They'll collapse unevenly and bow to one side. They may even collapse at certain points. Ugly, Ugly, Ugly! Angry Tongue

I sometimes like ugly, but one can only handle so much.  Grin

Like I asked the Daystar rep, "Is this normal?" Huh  Undecided

So why'd you buy the D83's instead of the 58's?...
83's are for 11" travel...

See if they will exchange them...

The 58's are supposed to be even longer than the 83's. The Savage has less than six inches of travel. So what are you talking about?  Huh The ones that are too long seem to look better, but they supposedly don't last as long being chronically overcollapsed. You seem to imply that the 58's are shorter than the 83's.

Are fork boots normally inconsistent in thickness? Do we just accept this sort of quality as the status quo?

The 83's are plastic,... 58's are rubber...
Yours aren't defective,.. they are just a different animal...

Get the 58's... you'll be happy.

"The 83's are plastic,... 58's are rubber..."

I think they are all made of the same material, but, from what I have read, it seems that those 83 boots were made with big bellows for a lot of extension and small compacted length. That makes them more prone to making a mess. That still doesn't excuse them for messing them up, though. I may go with the 70 series or something else that is more like the 58 series but a little shorter.

"Yours aren't defective,.. they are just a different animal..."

So, if I pinch the bellows and go along the circumference, and find that the material is thin on one side and thick on the other, as well as visibly imperfect in shape, I should accept that as normal for vinyl boots,  huh (as opposed to rubber boots, which are supposed to be perfect).

Seems like you don't expect much from vinyl, do you, Bot? Well, I do. Think about it-- Does your explanation really make sense?

Do you want me to take a picture of them?

Does anyone have anything meaningful to say about how fork boots are supposed to be? Is this sort of variance normal? Are we supposed to accept this as normal? Any one with some fork boot wisdom?

What other brands/models does everyone use? I read somewhere here about someone using Rancho shock boots? Huh

In case you missed it, the "okay" meant I was more or less agreeing with the above quote.  Grin

Trapped yourself into that one, Bot.  Grin

I'll take a picture tomorrow so you can see what I'm talking about.

The problem may be hard to see over the web. A Daystar rep talked like he was going to send me some replacements. We'll wait and see if he delivers.

See how crooked the bellows are? The whole boot seems slightly bowed. Also, in the picture below, you can see the bulges where the material is thinnest. It is not only crooked when stretched; these things even want to set  at a slant when completely collapsed. Both of them are like this. I think one is a little worse than the other. The defect is on opposite sides, though. One is thinnest at the backside where the holes are while the other is thinnest at the frontside, opposite the holes.

I would say it would be more noticeable if you saw it in person. The pictures seem to do the best work here, though.
