Okay I've had a '98 Savage-

I've done the simple things as change oil, check the air filter over the 2 years I've had it.

Now I got the bike with 3,700 miles and now I have 7,200 miles.

Oil change obviously and air filter check are needed this summer but what about the spark plug?

What are the things I need to look at to insure my ride stays riding?

Is the bike stored indoors.....or is it outside?

Do you only ride in hot dry weather....or do you ride in the rain often?

Long trips.....or short trips?

How old is the battery?

It is a 98....so obviously a brake fluid change should be done.....what color is the fluid in the window?
Brake pads in front?
Are the tires the originals ones?
It is likely due for a thorough cable oiling, along with the removal, cleaning and lubing of both hand levers, and the shift and brake pedal pivot points.

Someday I will be old......But not today!

How do I oil the cable? There aren't any catches in it and its smooth yet.

You can get cable lubers at the bike shop that have a clamp that you place o the top of the cable, and a spray can connects and flushes dirt out....then the solvent dries and leaves the lubricant behind.

Oldfeller tapes a plastic zip lock bag to the cable end and fills it with oil, and then lets the oil slowly work it's way down the cable.

WD takes the cables off and soaks them in a bath of oil.

And after another season or on the downtime now its time to check the cam tensioner or just do the mod.

You really don't want to wait until the cable has catches or is rough to oil it....this is "preventive" maintenance was are planning! You want the oil in the cable before it wears out.

Those questions I posted for you will help to determine what kind of maintenance you should be doing.....if the bike sits outside and is ridden in wet weather regularly - you will need to do a few more things than you will if you only ride on nice sunny days.

Re: Savage Maintenance Reply #6 - 01/22/16 at 18:12:15 If you squeeze the lever and put oil on the cable every few days for a month, it's Done. Or, go toss the cable in a bucket of oil. Done. It's really not rocket science. 20,000 miles, never lubricated a cable. Never had a problem. I would ask the 100,000 + mile guys.
