Yeah, I don't understand how that works either. What a blood soaked sieve of a boat that thing was. IIRC, it even took a torpedo. I'm thinking the men tasked with the job saw the valiant fight and simply didn't have the stomach to continue to attack such wounded men who were still fighting.
