Here's some more off that site:

Question: Can this clearcoat be sanded and buffed?

Answer: Yes, provided you get enough clear on the surface. Usually you will want to apply at least 3 good coats of clear first then allow 24-36 hours before sanding with 1500-2500 grit wet sand paper. Then use a good quality buffing system such as 3M Perfect-It for a mirror shine.

Question: Can I use this clear coat over other spray paints?

Answer: Depends, SprayMax clear coats are generally very forgiving with what they are applied over. However, I would highly recommend a test panel prior to spraying over your whole project. Usually if you apply the paint, then after it has dried about 1 hour but not more than 3 hours is the best time to apply clear coat. If the paint surface is already fully cured, it is recommended to sand the area with 800 - 1000 grit sand paper prior to applying clear coat.

You mean you have to read the instructions ?  Roll Eyes   What kinda deal is that !  Undecided

The last time I painted a gas tank was my first Savage years ago.   back then the polyurethane had a "slight"  color to it.   Now the Clear stuff is out there.   It looks good .  Cool

Well I still have the other can of the High $ stuff if need  be .

Thanks for the tip Kris    ,     I'm thinking of all the scratches on my S-40 tank .   That polishing thing do I need any special equipment ?   I've seen those polisher things at Harbor Freight , but never thought about buying one ...

A dual action sander would probably be your best but I'm no expert. For a part the size of a mc gas tank, you could probably just do it by hand. Here's a good place to start:

If you painted the tank when there was high humidity, the tank could have "blushed".  As the solvent is evaporating from the freshly applied paint, the surface of the paint becomes cooler than the air temp.  When this happens in high humidity - the cool surface of the paint can cause the humid air to condense water onto the surface, and this can result in the paint getting a hazy surface instead of a gloss.

If the finish is smooth (no runs and very little orange peel) - then sanding is not necessary.  Buffing is done with a polisher, and most polishing of the 2K paints is done with a foam pad (enamels and lacquers normally used a wool pad).  You start with a a buffing compound and a stiff foam pad, then use a polishing compound on a gentle pad to remove the swirl marks.

I recently bought the Harbor Freight buffer and I was surprised how well it works.....I gave my 30 year old 1 speed buffer away after using this Harbor Freight buffer.

The large 7" pads are great for cars - but for motorcycle work I bought some 4" pads as they give better control.  You won't keep the compound from flying around, so it is best to throw towels or blankets over anything you don't want to throw some compound on.

This is where I get my pads....I buy the compound at the local auto paint store.

I would suggest you find a paint or detail shop and ask them what they would charge to buff it......that will save you from buying $ 100 worth of supplies to do one tank.

Or....I can bring my stuff to one of the Dragon Runs (or if you come up to KY in August), and we can buff the darn thing!

Wow !  Shocked

That sounds like a lot of options ...  Tongue

BUT :

One of those options sounds better than the rest .  Smiley

(or if you come up to KY in August), and we can buff the darn thing!

I'll plan on bring the Harley in August . !  Cool   it looks good now with a layer of Polyurethane  for the top coat and will probably be just fine for years to come.   My Yellow Savage Polyurethane top coat was still looking good after 6 or 7 years when I sold it , and that was the "Old Style" polyurethane.    Undecided

It was Sunday when I put the  2K paint on .  The sky was clear , and the front room of the garage was (70 degs. or so) warm.   That stuff just dried dull .  Embarrassed
I did get some 400 grit paper to sand with to help keep the (Orange Peal) stuff out of the mix.   But I been threaten to "Remove that THING out of the Kitchen" , so I'm calling it "Good enough" .  Roll Eyes

I've got the fuel pump in thawing out the rubber seal now so I can put it back on.

Lawl, the one and only time my ex complained about me working on a bike inside the house was cleaning carbs
it wasn't the presence of carbs on the kitchen table, it was the nasty old gas fumes choking her
Then again, I was doing balljoints for my 72 Cutlass inside the apartment the day she met me, so i guess it was no surprise

I had a friend with a '72 Cutlass Supreme. It came from Minnesota where they salt the roads in the winter. The floor was so rotten you could watch the road go by under your feet. There was nothing on that car that worked right. A junkyard offered him $100 for it and he accepted. Before we delivered it he gave the Rochester carb to his soon-to-be brother-in-law for his '68 GTO. When the guy at the junkyard saw the missing carb he only offered $50. My buddy accepted it!  Grin

The 70s Cutlass was the quintessential beater car, it should have come from the factory with one off color fender, a bent antenna, and a cracked windshield
mine had all tree, baby poo green with a white fender
It pleased me to leave the exterior like that while making the interior like new, making the AC work, and seriously increasing horsepower
My friends used to say my talent was taking ugly cars and making fast ugly cars of them  Grin

I put the Harley tank on yesterday and rode in the cold for a bit to try out the "Mini-Ape's" ... It was (is) different .  They're almost too high  Huh ,  I'll try it out for a trip or two , might keep them but will be looking for "Just a little bit shorter" .  Smiley

The "Tire" project is next .  See ya on the Dark side in a few days !  Wink
