0 miles chain tensioner extension measurement?
01/08/16 at 17:55:36

My 2012's tensioner's extension measures 16 mm after 12,000 miles. I'm going to replace it anyway, as I've already purchased a Versy and have opened-up the clutch cover-so might as well.
I'm curious as to the tensioner's extension measurement from the factory, to get an idea of the amount of wear ( i.e. mm/ 1,000 miles ) for my riding style and to gauge how often to open-up the clutch cover to check it. Someone suggested a very rough estimate to be 1mm/ 1,000 miles. Mine seems much lower than that, however I don't know what the extension measurement is at 0 miles.

Hard riding will shorten it's life. Stop and go for short distances will shorten it's life. There really is no way to gauge how fast it will wear. It depends on too many things.

Even if you put a new chain on, there's no Known number of mm of tensioner extension, because the guides are a variable that play into the equation.
I didn't change anything but the cam and chain and I remember being unhappy about how far it was extended, but can't remember what it measured.  O Can tell you that the chain I removed didn't measure as worn out when I did the measurement. I d say there was another five thousand miles in it, but I wanted to put a cam in and Verslagen hadn't invented the gizmo yet, so,I did it anyway.
I was justin_o_guy back then.
Can't say what mileage, don't remember hoot.
Except that I rode the snot outta the thing.
The ends of the pegs were ground down to almost falling off.

I took the cover off a 2007 with 1,262 miles, and a 2002 with 3,848 miles, and both pensioners measured 14mm.

Wow! That much. I might have given 5 or 6 but that's half the extension capabilities right there.

So, what we really need is the first hole, say, 10mm out from where it is and then the second hole in order to really get full use out of the chain?

Somewhere,.... I heard an estimate of 11mm for virgin...
Makes sense, it wouldn't be zero....
The start doesn't really matter...   it's the change allowed before the adjuster gives out.
The chain can handle the stretch....  it's minimal...
We.... want the adjuster to handle it...

An external screw adjust, would be nice,... but, in either case the plastic guides have a limited life...
So,... what's the matter?...
Tech must catch up with engineering...
If guides lasted indefinitely,...an infinite adjuster would be maintenance free...
In this case,... our old school machine, is keeping up well enough...

Belt drive, would be cleaner....
Gear dive would be louder...
We'd still have Bitches... Huh
