Comfortable Seat
01/03/16 at 08:16:31

Hi everyone! I am new to riding. Got my license in September 2015, am 51 years young and have about 1,000 miles on in rural Maine. If I had ever known how amazing it was I would have had my license many decades ago! Drove on Christmas Eve AND day after Christmas here! It was in the 50s!

Anyway, I have a 2002 Suzuki Savage 650. Love the bike, but finding the stock seat is somewhat uncomfortable for distances longer than a few miles.  It's not that the seat itself is uncomfortable - it is too narrow, so I feel like I'm shifting around trying to get comfortable. Attached is a photo so you can see what I have now.

Any recommendations as to where to look for a seat, what brand is the best?

Thanks!  Smiley

Howdy Mom,... Lookin' good out there.
There's a mod for the seat that helps a lot and is way cheap...
It's called the seat lift...
Try it first...  Cool
Info on how, here...

And after you do that, if you want to do more, the sky is the limit. I think Versy has a HD seat on his. I put a vulcan seat on mine. There are plenty you can buy that specifically fit, but I don;t know about them. I got my seat free and made it fit. Most anything will fit, if you have a big enough hammer.  Wink

Welcome aboard!

Some folks have just added a gel-pad to the stock seat and found it to be acceptable.

I tried many solutions.  Settled on the Airhawk seat cushion.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Srotag I so want to do that mod
But
where then would I put the sissy bar bag I planned on fitting?
Well, I guess it'd work on the fender as well as the seat

If you have the original 2002 seat, the foam padding has possibly deteriorated to the uncomfortable level you are experiencing. If you take the seat in to a friendly upholstery shop they will probably be able to help you out.

My S40 seat is quite comfortable.  You might consider changing to the newer seat.  As old.indian mentioned, your foam may have deteriorated in the original seat.

Or, if you're handy, you can recover the seat yourself. A trip to the upholstery shop and some of the type of material they use for outdoor applications, the right foam rubber, an electric knife, a friend, a staple gun and some serious contact cement.
But start with raising the front of the seat.

I bought a corbin , helped some . I also got a set of Ed's 4" forward controls . I think they made more  of a difference than the seat did for comfort.

russ makes a good point, when my a$$ gets sore on the highway, I get some relief by propping my ankles on the pegs
I've considered both forward controls and highway bars, but have yet to jump on either solution

Thanks for all the responses! I think I'm gonna go with the Yamaha seat - looks very comfortable. Can't wait for spring!

My wife and I ride two up a lot. I did the seat raising for myself, as the rider ( 1" ). Its amazing how a seemingly small adjustment can improve the comfort. For my wife, as the passenger, I bought an Aerostitch sheep skin pad ( laminated to non-slip material) that's removable. They come in various shapes and sizes for a rider or passenger.
I'm fine, and my wife has never complained of being uncomfortable. However, we always stop about every hour, if only for a short 15 minute stretch when traveling by motorcycle or car.
