Muffler Packing

I was looking across the Web about mufflers and stuff, and found that some people seem to be constantly repacking their glass packs. They can't drive as far as you can spit without thinking they have to repack their mufflers. Any opinions on this? Does anyone here EVER repack his/her mufflers, much less every so many miles?

Does the Dyna muffler need repacking? That would seem hard to do, given it's design. Is it even a glass pack in the first place?

Big Thumpy is tough on mufflers that need packing... She'll blow out glass pack in just a couple months or even less... steel pack in less than 6 months...

Mufflers that use packing for noise reduction, are usually a just a pipe with a waffled surround in which the packing is placed... Supertapp's add plates at the back end...
A chambered muffler, directs exhaust into a chamber, than back out... The reduction is better, they last longer, and especially for big Thumps... they smooth the exhaust pulses better...
That's why they cost more to make...
We are very fortunate that Harley riders like to make noisemakers out of their bikes..
Gives us a good supply of well made muffys... Wink

I reckon the advantage to glass packs is that they can offer high performance and a (sometimes) coveted sound... if they are well designed and implemented. It seems that they have a great disadvantage as well-- they wear out.

So, it is true, repacking is about like changing the oil. Better keep those muffler end cap bolts greased up with graphite. Wink

My KLR has an aftermarket muffler which is supposed to be packed about every 8k miles. I haven't tried this yet; however, I have read to put in steel wool for the initial layer then use the regular material.

How many miles should we get at out of a dyna muff? I took mine off and looked through it not long ago. A bunch of what ever was in there is gone now. Just sounds a little bit louder though.

We get our Shorty's used,.. so there's no accounting for past miles.
... my first one lasted 16k before the center baffle plate blew out.
This one,... has gone over 20k and is still fine.
They don't ever burn out... eventually, depending on your locale, they will rust through.

Steel wool,.. can catch fire pretty spectacularly... I wouldn't try it myself.
I have heard of steel kitchen scrunchies being used,.. but don't offer near the sound deadening of glass pack.
...and if your pipe goes straight and open through the outer packing... even glass don't do a lot.
Performance wise... they are much the same as an open pipe... unless they use baffle plates at the end.
It's just a cheap way to make a muffler... the biggest advantage is size.
They can be made small.

The only halfway tolerable muffler packing is spun asbestos. Any wood stove shop has it. Wear gloves and taped long sleeves, it makes fiberglass itch feel like getting caressed by a smoking hot chick in silk stockings. Use wire to secure the spun material. Add a stick stopper baffle from the Harley catalog, any good indie shop knows what they are.

Wouldn't you be more concerned about wearing a dust mask? How about all the people who have to inhale the exhaust?
