Yeah, I may be starting a tire war Wink

I have aftermarket turn signals that push the fenders in a little. Is the 712  140/90 that tight inside the fender? I'll need to tighten the fender bolts when I change it. they are rusty and loose. They allow the fender to sink quite a bit. As far as the sissy bar bolts, I have changed them already, and I can change them again if needed. I am curious and tempted to try the taller gearing. Last time I checked, a local (well, it's quite a drive Roll Eyes) mechanic had a 735 130/90 in stock. It's that Dunlop clone thing.

I have been thinking about the Pirelli, but it's a tad expensive.

I guess I've put 1200 miles on the thing since October, so I could try a Metzler. That would give me a better idea of the difference between old and new tires.... Nah... too expensive.  Wink The great thing about cheap, low mileage tires is all the different brands you can try within a year or two Cheesy If I got a Metzler, I'd be stuck with it FOREVERRRRR!!!!  Angry NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Angry Grin I'd be old, grey haired and ready to kick the bucket before I get rid of that thing. Grin

So, which one wins?

Remember, I have mud to deal with. That kinda discouraged me from the 712 for a while.

I currently have a worn old Metzler 140/80 to finish off while I am deciding. Compared to what's on it, even the 130/90 will give taller gearing, and even the 140/90 will probably give better handling than what's on it.

Ironic, ain't it. Wink

The cheapest tires I can get hold of are the 712 and 735. That is largely why I have picked them.

Looks like the Kenda K671 and the Shinko 230 are pretty cheap too at Bike Bandit. Anybody favor them over the others? I know that I have a 712 front already. Does that make a difference?

I wore out the factory IRC back tire at about 5500 miles and put on a Metzler (it was the only size I could get locally).  I have about 2000 on the Metzler now and it is showing a lot of wear as well, as much as the IRC did at those miles.

I think the Metzler is a stickier/softer  tire though.  It handles better with it.  The front is ready for  change as well now, actually overdue.  It used to be the back end would slide out first on a corner but now the front will.  

As far as mud goes you will find that your front tire will jam solid with mud and end up plowing a locked up tire no matter what rubber you put on.  There just isn't enough clearance on your front fender.

A lot of our local roads skimp out on the gravel and if it is raining I have to drive on the shoulder where there is a bit of grass growing.

Interesting perspective-- different from the conventional thinking. Metzlers are usually thought to be long-lived. Thanks for the advice on the mud clogging. It clogged so badly once that it wouldn't hold itself up. Just about dropped it. Can't say if the from tire locked or not. Didn't seem to.

Your front always locks up before the rear in mud.  The rear tire has the engine forcing it to turn.  I don't weigh  lot, 155 dressed.  I find it pretty easy to make the back tire spin on my S40 without trying so my assessment of Metzler tires may be off from the general view.

I put Heidenau tires on  my XT and loved them for the pavement but the rear is a joke off road compared to the factory Trail Wing.  I am thinking of a Heidenau front for the S40.
