tappet question
12/28/15 at 10:36:27

I've been reading all the oil threads and my understanding is that the oil recommendations are based on the s40's use of "flat tappets". Having never opened up an engine before, my question is this: Is this referring to the pads on the  lobes of the rocker arms- since when I check/adjust the valves, the screw I'm turning is referred to in some text as the "tappet adjusting screw"?

BTW- based on the forum I'm switching over to the Rotella oil.

Please, excuse me for pointing this out, but I think you just did.
Though I thought that it too, was , for lack of a better way to say it, well placed.

My family's old Subaru (1990) has flat rocker arms. Believe me, I had to replace one when it broke Undecided, but that's another story. I'm using Rotella T6 in it, and it seems to like it somewhat. Of course, it needed an oil change. The thing has always had trouble with noisy lifters, perhaps even when it was young. I have been wondering if that engine doesn't need some ZDDP, especially to protect against the intermittently clacking hydraulic lifters.

If only I didn't have to worry about that darned cat!
