Getting creative
12/12/15 at 11:06:17

Hey all,

So as I was building a new cam chain tensioner piston, I forgot to retighten my timing adjustment cover (checked the valves after riding a 1K after an adjustment just to make sure they hadn't changed much). I was riding and all of a sudden felt oil shooting out of the timing adjustment port.

It's 75 out today in the middle of Dec in VA, so I was like I need to ride! I found a drain stopper that fits perfectly snug in the threadhole and it even has the cutout so the bolt thats used to turn the motor fits in. Threw on some RTV black around the stopper and fitted in. Going to ride in a few hours to see if it holds. Fingers crossed!

the car next to gets a dent, this could be bad if the car is owned by a russian mobster.
you get a wet boot, could be bad if you need to stop and that shoe has no traction.
all the oil blows out and the engine seizes.

pick one.   Huh

Guess I gotta gaze down every now and again to watch it. How much pressure is being exerted out that hole? The plug is pretty snug.

It also is a temp fix until I get a new cover Tongue so hopefully it'll hold for four some odd days!

There's an aftermarket design that is easier to remove, which apparently you've mastered, and install,, which, apparently, you're needing some practice with.

It wasn't for lack of trying. I was just up late and had the oversight of retighteneing the cover. I've ridden a hundred miles so far and the plug has held so far so fingers crossed.

Here is the link to the alternate timing port cover.  It has a hex head instead of the slot.

The crankcase pressure is greatest at high rpm and full throttle - if you avoid that situation and keep the throttle application light.....you have the greatest chance of success.

I have a SET Rule on plugs. IF  it goes in the hole, it gets tightened.
Oil drain plugs, especially.
