Like the Model T....available in any color as long as it was black....

Ahhhh, memories....my very first bike was a '65 CB160...2 cylinders, 2 carbs, 1 set of points, black "toaster tank," no turnsignals, & a seat that felt like a vinyl-covered 2x6...and I LOVED it...lol. The battery would only click the starter solenoid, so it was kickstart only, & (until I did a ring&valve job) smoked like a 2-stroke scooter.

Hey, other "old guys" like me, remember when a 450-500cc was a Big Bike? I lusted after several bikes way back then: the CB450, the CB350Four, the Triumph Bonneville 650. My first long trip was on a CB350K4.

Yep....I am that old.

I started riding my dad's Yamaha YAS1C....125cc two stroke twin around the farm, and then a bit later he got a ratty Honda 305 Scrambler.  As a 100 pound kid that 305 sure was a handful when I tipped over.  I can remember seeing the first CB450 Honda at a dealer display at the County Fair.....and it looked incredibly powerful to me.

The 68 black bomber isn't really the same as the 80's Nighthawk, we're talking 20 years separation here, and Japanese companies didn' move as slowly as american companies back then
The Nighthawk line was a light weight bike that carried it's weight well enough that the MSF used them, in 250 sioze,  alongside the Rebel for their basic Ridercourse for decades, and a few of them are still soldiering along in that capacity
even a 750 NH was a light (for a 750) easy to handle MC that was nimble and quick

although I might have found them heavy, and even top heavy, compared to a 50, they compare very favorably to the S40 and will walk it in a straight line, around a curve, or on the freeway
(the S40 will get the jump off the line, but the NH will show it it's tailight by the top of 2nd gear)

Very true, Art. All that the NH & CB450 had in common were 2 cylinders, CV carbs, & chain drive.

The 450 Nighthawk can be traced to the 400 Hawk (starting in '78, I believe), using the 2-intake/1-exhaust valve per cylinder configuration. Had most of the advantages of DOHC/4 valves per cylinder, but only one cam, so simpler and less expensive to manufacture. Also, was fitted with a vibration counterbalancer.

I had an '82 CM450...very similar to the NH, but kinda-sorta cruiser styled, similar to what Yamaha did with their 400 & 650 twins. Nice mid sized bike, but not as classic as the CB450's were, IMHO.

Yeah Rodger. The guy down the road had a 750 when I was 14 or 15. All of us boys on the block stopped whatever we were doing and watched when he rode by.
God, how did he EVER get his parents to go along with That???

Sonny, good article.

Why is Twin Cam better when one can run 4 valves?

Versy, I SAW thayut!
