Cool! I "had the hots" for those CB450's back when I started out on my toaster-tank CB160. If spark is weak, check the ignition points. A light filing & re-gapping may help.

The TX500 & 750 were good looking bikes, but in the old Road Rider magazine, the testers complained about the whirring noise from all the chains...cam chain and 2 vibration-dampening balancer chains.

Can't go too far wrong, 3 bikes for a C-note. Have any pics of #3?

Roger,
I didn't take any pictures of it because it is just a parts bike. The front end was cur off with a torch; roughly! It is a Yamaha as well; of the v-twin variety. Late 80s early 90s. The guy I got these from said it was his daily rider and it quit sparking on the front cyl. He said it was probably the electronic ignition but he had no way of knowing and eventual cut off the front end for a 3wheeler project he was building.

I have a 1982 Yamaha Virago 920cc Vtwin, a "work in progress."

There are a lot of the Viragos still around, so I wouldn't think you'd have a problem parting it out on ebay or craigs list.

Thought I'd use this topic to wedge my way back in here. Been fighting winter here and haven't thought much about riding. When its 12-14 below motorcycling seems a distant dream.
That said I'm  starting to get the itch as weather is suppose to bump 50 degrees in the next few days. I'll be riding if I have to haul my bike to dry ground first to ride it.

Anyway, back to why I used this thread to wedge my WA back in here. . . I sold both the Honda 450 & the Yamaha 750 and made a nice profit. I am now thinking of pick on up a Honda Ascott FT500 that needs a little cosmetic work. It doesn't have a title but I think I can get one from another state.
Any of you gents have any experience with this bike?

I have no owned one but by all accounts I have heard from those who have they are good reliable bikes, so long as you can still get parts I'd probably sink a little money in if the bike seems appealing to you
Personally I like the looks of it
I'd go in search of am ascot forum if I were you, they'll know all the issues

I looked at the Ascott forum....nice looking bike and reading the road tests it appears to be a nice handling bike.  Reading on the forum a bit it sounds a lot like this forum.....the bike is good on the back roads, and not so much on the highway (there was even someone wanting to put a different motor in his frame.....just like our forum).

Parts may be difficult to find for a bike that was only built 3 years (82,83,84)....even the newest model is 32 years old!

Getting a bike without a title is always a bit of a challenge.....I believe getting a Vermont title through the mail is possible, and there are some online sources that charge a fee to get you a title....something like $ 200 for a motorcycle.

I am not sure if I would be up to the challenge!

Yes Dave, I think it would be a challenge getting a title. What speaks to me about the Ascott design is the amount of clearance it has for a bike that is designed for hard surface road riding. Makes me wonder if it wouldn't be a very good country bike. . . Gravel roads, trails and hard surface riding.

If I remember right, it was named for ascot raceway.  a short dirt track in SoCal.  So it maybe the 1st production tracker.

That Yamaha twin is a TX750 not really but kinda rare. They had issues with the crankshaft by the time Yamaha got it fixed sales had dropped off?  But collectors like them for some reason , they do have nice lines!

Did you regret letting go of the Yamaha?
I See that thing all cleaned up, back to stock. And I really like what I see, but, I know how much time and money that would be. I'm looking at a W650 to resurrect, should I get the title issue solved.

The VT500 is the designation for the twin I think.

For what I got for that Yamaha XT750 I've got no regrets. It could be and may be again a real cool machine. The guy that bought it wants it for a restoration project. He's retired with time on his hands. He actually bought both bikes at two different times. It was kinda crazy. He just ga E me what I was asking on both accounts.

I just made an offer on the Ascot FT. It needs some work. But my offer is low enough that I can part it out if nothing else. I've actually considered transplanting the engine into something else if need be. . . We'll see.
