Pull off the bike. Remove the center piece the cable screws to. Pour in glass cleaner, swirl around, drain. Repeat until clean. Plan on your odometer never working correctly again.

Before assembly, pack the speedometer gears with petroleum jelly. Can't miss them, they are the piece you remove to make the access hole for the glass cleaner.

Wouldn't petroleum jelly melt? Would assembly lube be better?

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

WD, seriously dude?

So it's factory sealed I take it and we cannot clean it?

How did you get dirt up there?  Is one of the lights or plugs in the bottom of the speedometer missing?

I can't think of any way to clean it - except for sending it to North Hollywood Speedometer.  They can take the sealed ring off, clean the glass, and then put it back together.

It most likely will cost more than getting a good used speedometer with a clean face.  Just watch eBay for one with similar mileage that is in good shape.  Everybody building a RYCA is ditching their stock speedo.

Im not sure how it got that way. If it's factory sealed, then this is from the factory and possibly condensation and drying cycles have caused the build up.

You may be right about costs to repair vs replacement.

If any one of the indicator lights came loose, it could allow moisture in there.  Also there is a plug installed where the early models had an indicator light to show if the sidestand was down, and that hole is blocked off with a small plug to keep dirt/water out.....maybe your plug is missing.

thanks Dave,

performed a quick ebay search and found used replacements range from $30-150. The majority being the older models you described with sidestand indicator light. I did see a few new models with the "plug" in for newer models. Maybe I'll pop this one out and check.

There are a few years that have different wiring to the speedo.
some years have the signals operating together.
no problem really, just swap wiring harness.

Step 1: Buy one off of a person doing a Ryca build. (The added benefit is that all of a sudden you could have a lower mileage bike too!)

Or.....I got one with 40,000 miles on it.  You could get a lot of "street cred" with that puppy!
