Half Helmet
09/21/15 at 15:23:19

I know it's unsafe ,but i found a nice half helmet at a tag sale ,very good price. My ears are exposed ,whereas my old helmet ,my ears were covered .It is a completely different  riding experience ,I can hear the motor and gears much more clearly, and i like it better.I guess it doesn't really offer much protection tho,I was reading that other post. Yike.

Yep, Totally different riding experience. I've totaled three, twice, no helmet, third time, modular FF, saved me.
First one, landed on the side of my head and a shoulder. Laying my head over so hard it cracked three vertebrae. A helmet woulda been a fatal fulcrum.
It's all in the crash,, the second one I broke the handle bars, right where thigh becomes torso. The hematoma hospitalized me a few days. Head never got touched..
So, once, helmet woulda been fatal.
Once, didn't matter.
Once, saved my bacon.

Check out the Hurt report.
And,someone had a breakdown on heads hitting.. The big percentage included face impact.

Odds are, the helmet is your friend.
At the end of the day, it's your call. I miss riding, some days, it's Really bad, but I don't miss watching the morons and making efforts to stay visible to them.

1/2 the helmet, 1/2 the protection...
In my accident few years back had
it not been for a ff helmet, I would
have had twice the injuries..
Just my 2 cents worth..

Two sides.
When you know you are unprotected you ride a bit more carefully.
If you still happen to crash, the protection reduces the pain.
There are those who have crashed, and are glad they are worn the helmet.
There are those who have never crashed, and don't want to lose the paranoid of no protection.

Statistically, helmets do not reduce deaths/accidents -- because helmeted riders tend to be a little more faster / less watchful.

Whatever!   I wear a Daytona half helmet, smallest and lightest.  At over 45 mph I NEED ear plugs if I am going to go over a couple of miles.

I love my half helmet. I know its not as safe, but I enjoy it enough to take that chance. I wear a ff in the cold months and I hate not hearing the motor as well.

I wear a FF helmet and enjoy the protection it offers. I have no problems hearing the engine or anything else.  Huh

Paladin makes  a point. Feeling safe because of equipment, creating a sense of security, leading to riskier behavior.
Knowing the percentage of helmeted riders and the percentage of crashed riders helmeted,, be handy.

Nah, I don't rely on the helmet to keep me safe. I trust ME more than that. I do prefer the extra safety though. I just don't plan on testing it out!  Wink

Half helmet unless it is really cold out, then I'll dust off the 3/4 shell. If I'm in Arkansas, closest thing to a helmet is a doo-rag to kind of keep the wind knots out of my hair.

I quit racing vintage motorcycles when the sanctioning bodies mandated full face helmets, even for ancient bikes at low speeds on dirt ovals. Gave away the completed and project vintage racers, turned the helmets into hanging flower baskets, never looked back or attended another race.

If full face helmets ever become mandatory stateside, the bikes will be scrapped. Ought as well be in a car at that point.

I'm glad I wear full face, but its a flip up so I do have a choice but I flip down after  a kilometre or so and had the annoyance of a bee sting while flipped up. I certainly wouldn't want full face mandatory and it isn't in little New Zealand.

The full face helmet can be hot in the summer - but it is what I feel safe wearing.  I might get a pudding bowl helmet to make the look of my Cafe' bike complete....but I am not going to take any long rides with it.  I like the protection from bugs and paving that the FF helmet provides.

You shouldn't leave the house without a full coverage helmet.

How about that I don't do stupid stuff instead, so I don't need a helmet.

I couldn't even watch that.. I KNOW what pain is. I can't watch people get hurt. I understand what drives them to do what they are doing. Notice the lack of girls involved in risky behavior?

Your choice, I have all three.... wear them according to how i want to ride.

Statistics say, if you ride two wheels.... you are more likely to die than if you ride on four..... my point.... who ever does the statistics can swing them what ever way they wish.... using the data they choose.

BUT.... like some have said... from 3/4's down, wear ear plugs.... they don't have to be factory noise spec, but just knock the wind noise down.

Ride like you are naked and want everyone to see you! Smiley

Or ride like you are posting naked... and everyone will want to know you! Cheesy
