I'm perplexed. (Very sorry for being so wordy.)
Some people on this site have already responded to me via emails about taking off the head cover and retightening the head nuts/bolts to specification (pretty sure there are no bolts involved). Thanks. Feel free to respond again.
I wanted to find out what others think, especially those who are in my situation.
The situation: I have a new S40 and am close to the initial 600 mile service. I would like to do the service myself (I've had some tooling experience on previously owned bikes). Normally, I go by the book when it comes to the maintenance schedule.
The regular initial Suzuki 600 mile maintenance (as well as ALL future scheduled maintenance services) require the usual: changing oil and filter, adjust valve timing, and other miscellaneous checks. But then it ALSO says to retighten down the 4 cylinder head nuts (Not only for the 600 mile service, but also for every future scheduled maintenance! ... ie every time the oil is changed, they say to retighten the head nuts)!
I have the Suzuki service manual as well as the Chilton's manual. If I read them correctly, to retighten the head nuts requires that the valve head cover be removed, then the head nuts actually loosened, lubricated with oil (don't know why), and then retightened. Also, that famous 'seal cap' that seems to leak oil as time goes by must also be removed in order to tighten one of the head nuts. This whole situation is not only a lot of work, but it seems like it could actually create problems before there is one!
The Suzuki service shop in town indicates that they do all of the service items that Suzuki requests at each regular service ... but I really wonder if they go to all of the trouble of taking off the head cover to retighten the head nuts at every service.
There are also some external nuts around the engine cylinder that I could easily tighten ... anyone can see them by looking at the engine ... they are the 2 nuts that tighten the 'cylinder to the head' ... and the 2 nuts that tighten the 'cylinder to the block' ... But by only tightening them and not tightening the 4 head nuts, I fear that I might get 'something out of sinc'? Might this be correct?
In summary, Is it really necessary to do this at the 600 mile service and at every regularly scheduled service in the future? Or is it ok to ignore this completely until the famous 'seal cap' begins to leak before getting into the engine head? Also, if I tighten only the external nuts (as described in the prevous paragraph) without retightening the 4 head nuts at the same time, will the retightening get out of sinc?
Thanks for any suggestions and help, Ron G
