New Fork or new fork seal?
09/12/15 at 08:40:21

Hi everyone I'm new here. I've been lurking around for awhile trying get as much info as possible. Now that i just bought a 96 Savage, I have 1 issue that i know of that needs some attention.

The right fork has a leak and also 4inches above the seal, there are a few gouges on the fork. When i rub my finger over them i can feel some indentation.

Now, my question is do i need a new fork or fork seal?

Thanks

I have a backhoe, some of the rods on the hydraulic cylinders are a little beat up. But, as long as there are no sharp spots, it won't cut the seal.
I'm not sure that part ever even Gets TO the seal.
In the tech section I believe there is information on using a piece of thin plastic to wipe down inside, clearing the seal of debris that could cause weeping.
I dressed sharp edges carefully, cleaned and JB welded the hydraulic rams where it needed it. Been a few years, its holding.

You can make one in 30 seconds from a 2 liter pop bottle...
It works... slide it under the seal, rotate around the tube, pull up grit... no more weeping...

This might help...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USac5G4SI-U

Get yourself a deck of NEW plastic coated playing cards and cut one to the same shape and it will work fine...and you'll have over 50 fork seal cleaners.

Had the same problem, I did the little jammy from a pop bottle.  Whamo!  no more issues after clearing out the grime.

I'd consider putting on gators to keep that crap out.

Best regards,
