carburetor problems I think

So I am having A problem with my Carb I think.

Symptom:
Idles great but when the rpm's get around 50% it cuts out and nearly dies. It will die if at the studder i pull in the clutch.

I have cleaned the carb twice and the symptom persists.

Any help would be great.

It sounds like your petcock could be the issue.  Give us some info on your bike, it will help get you some answers.

No I hadnt read the link yet. I will read that

The bike is a 96 Suzuki savage LS 650. I have replaced the petcock as per this guide http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1 last summer.

The bike has about 10k miles

replaced it with what?

How often do you ride?

when did you last service the air filter?  Oil?

Sorry Im such a noob. haha

i replaced the stock petcock with a new Yamaha Raptor 660 petcock.
I live in SE Idaho (altitude 4,865) and i ride the bike a couple times a week all summer. the oil was changed this last spring so im well below the miles for a new one. and the air filter was replaced last summer.

It's a little bit of a stretch but maybe spark plug.  It would be an easy fix and certainly couldn't hurt unless the one in there now is fresh.  I like to start with the easy and cheap things first if it makes even a little bit of sense.

while riding? gradual increase of rpms?  or sudden increase in rpms?

from idle? or a long run from mid rpms and sudden drop in rpms?

at med rpm's.

so idle's great. then as i accellorate gets to half rpm and it sputters. I pulled the clutch when it did it the first time and it died. If i dont pull the clutch the  chain keeps the engine running until the rps get low enough for it to kick back in.

Hope that makes sense

as previously suggested, change the plug

make sure to clean the area around the plug, you don't want shitey little stuff falling in there.

but here's what I suggest... run it up till it sputters, pull in the clutch and let it die, then exchange the plug.  take a picture of the plug and post it.

If you've got an inline fuel filter, it might be restricting fuel flow.

So, if he pulls in the clutch when the engine begins to "sputter" and the engine quits, then it isnt sputtering....its off. As he says, the only thing keeping it running is the fact that the bike is moving, the same way a push-start works if your starter solenoid is shot, yes? Wouldnt that indicate is ISNT electrical, but fuel related?

Personally, although I'm no mechanic by any means, I've never heard of a spark plug that is happy as a clam at idle and up through mid-throttle and then quits working. I suppose it's possible that it is cracked and the frequency of the vibration at mid throttle causes a breakdown of the insulator or something, but to quit firing due to load? That would be a new one on me. Looking forward to seeing the solution here.

Does it matter if you're riding aggressively or lil old lady style?

If there is a weakness in the electrical system providing energy to the spark plug - it can run OK at low throttle settings but show up when more throttle is applied.  I have never seen an explanation of this - but I suspect the additional fuel in the cylinder makes it harder for the spark to jump the gap at the plug electrodes.  It is not always rpm related - but more to the throttle opening.  A weak spark plug can likely make the same symptoms....idles fine but misses under heavier throttle settings.  However....the engines tends to just miss under heavier throttle settings - it does not just stop completely.

Is there a possibility that when you had the carb apart - you got the needle in wrong....or got the spacer on the wrong side of the needle?
