Longer voyage on leaking head plug
08/21/15 at 16:55:18

Ello again. Anyways I had a family member pass away and the trip is 155ish miles one way and i have a leaking head plug. Are there any instances of a leaking head plug having a catastrophic failure and empty the whole engines supply of oil? I just wanted to make sure before i go and do a 300 mile trip in one day at about 65mph the whole time.

I carried oil when I was running the road. Mine didn't leak. But, at speed, oil went away. The more miles on the oil, quicker it went. That far, I'd have a quart with me. My oil fill was hard to open, even finger tight. I slotted a piece of 3/4 X 1/2 wood about four inches long. And the top from a quart of
rear end oil screws on the quart. No funnel needed.

I figured. I did clean mine up a week ago, put another 100 miles on it and its only leaked enough to have a thin coat of oil on the side. and didnt register that I lost any on the sight glass. I just want to make sure that this plug wont like shoot out and spurt oil about like a severed jugular.

Well,it's not something we've seen. But, I don't remember any leak healing up, either. Knowing what happens when it is low on oil would probably prompt me to err on the on the side of caution. I'd carry more than I thought I could need. At least enough to feel comfortable with getting there. You can get oil wherever you go, surely. Running Rotella, right?

10-4 and yep. Rotella T6 seems to be doing me very good, I changed it after the first 1k miles of owning it since it got really black and thick. got 600 miles on this change and its holding up much better

one of the ones I've changed was really loose.
vibrated up and down due to the breathing of the engine.
but I don't recall how much oil it lost in a day, only that it was a mess
and may have been that way for a couple of weeks.
