New member with the standard problems (Read 81 times)

I got my '98 Savage in the Spring. 8,500 miles on it so pretty low. Needing the cam chain adjuster because of chain noise and its got the oil puke syndrome so motor is covered in oil coming from above the exhaust pipe. I love the bike but now gotta park it and repair it. Wish me luck

The fun part is taking a motorcycle apart and working on it when I know nothing about taking a motorcycle apart and working on it!

The guy I bought it off of didn't seem to be too into preventative maintenance from the looks of everything else at his house

Rode hard and put away wet

Low oil most likely doesn't have much of an affect on the cam chain or tensioner. The low oil usually affects the cam, rockers or cam bearings in the head.....or the piston gets scuffed and the rings get locked in the piston grooves.

Checking the valve clearance could give you a clue on the health of the cam/rockers - if the clearance requires more than just a few thousandths of adjustment you have some serious wear. Checking the compression can give you an idea of the piston/cylinder health. And checking the cam chain adjuster is never a bad idea on a used bike.
