anybody found a GOOD looking brake/tail light??
08/18/15 at 17:16:11

I am starting an S40 custom for my wife.  Besides the majority of it being based on fixing the shortcomings of the S40 I want to take care of a couple of styling challenges.

Has anyone found a sleek looking tail/brake light that will bolt down to the stock rear fender?

Show me what you got!

thanks!

The tail light just screams late 80's, doesn't it?   Grin

I'm thinking of using a dual round with indicators.  Mounting really isn't as big of a problem as you might think.  Since we have a three point mount you can easily modify the base to fit.

I'd recommend removing the light and taking a really good look at the fender.  You'd be surprised what you'll come up with once it's off.  I know that might not be much help, but that's what I did.

It's not sleek, and IDK if it bolts to the stock fender but FWIW I'm using a repro Vincent/Velocette "STOP" taillight with LED. It's cool.

These are available on most bike parts web sites, not too expensive, and I think they look pretty good. I mounted it right to the licence  plate bracket.

AlfromNH - Thanks for the pic.  That would definately fit with what I am looking at doing if I can figure out how to cleanly cover the 3 holes. Body work would be a possibility as I am going to have it painted when it is done.

my other thought was something like this

You can see how I covered the holes with a magnetic ribbon thing. The holes are still there but not visible.

Ryca makes quite a few options.

I have the Bates style tail light and I freaking love it.  They are out of stock right now, but if you are into that style its worth it.  Quality construction, its LED and Ive had no issue with a fast blink.  Ill post a pic tonight when i get home from work.

Yea that is sleek....but at $ 14.99 it has the small  LED's that are not visible in direct sunlight.  You can see them if you are looking at it - but they are not bright enough to attract the attention of a distracted driver.

You really need a good tail/brake light. I am of the opinion that it really should be a DOT approved light.....or at least one that is equally as bright.

I went the same route as AlfromNH.  I found the hardware that came with the light was too short to mount it.  I had to open it up and remove the old hardware by melting the hot-melt glue that holds it in a seat.  Then I swapped in some longer bolts.  This also let me put a rubber bushing behind it to provide some cushion since it shakes a lot back there.

Of all the things you'll find, I think this one is the easiest IMHO.

Maybe keep the housing and swap out the leds for some high intensity smds like the ones I'm using for my running lights.  Those are so bright that they're unpleasant to look directly at.

I like that option, Stu...and it fits with the vision of the op.  I was also considering covering mine with the czech coat of arms or perhaps rigging a luggage rack there.
