Starter engaging on shutdown?
08/17/15 at 16:56:25

Hi all. I've a 2014 S40; 1500 miles on it; had its first service about four months ago; very well cared for. Just the other day I returned from a ride, shutdown the bike, and instead of the comforting "poof" I heard the starter wind down. Uh oh. Started the bike, shut it down, same thing. Moved the bike forward a little bit, started, shutdown, no starter noise this time.

Hmm. What's going on? I've done some research and I think this is what's called "kickback", right? Is this normal for the S40? She's finally getting ridden a lot these past five months; I've put 1100 miles on her in perhaps two months and I guess she's breaking in.

But, does the bike have a problem? Thanks very much for your help.

Cheers, David

Maybe just needs to be broken-in? Strange problem.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Here's a thread I just found on this forum:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1414297461/3

Apparently the OP had the same problem. The response:

"If the engine kicks backward, it'll engage the starter.
since you got an '01, you got a starter torque limiter to protect against it."

After reading this thread I can't tell if my bike has a problem or not.

I also found this explanation for kickback:

"Kick back is when the air/fuel mixture lights off BEFORE the piston reaches Top-Dead-Center. This sends the piston backwards..."

Thanks for any insight.

Cheers, David

My bike kicks back almost every time I shut it off (Wiseco piston with higher compression).....hasn't broken anything yet.

Luckily the torque limiter can handle the issue and prevent anything from breaking.

Ok. That's what I was thinking. My son just brought his "new" 1994 Suzuki Intruder 1400 home tonight. We went for a short ride; he shutdown his bike and it did the same thing as mine the other day.

Guess it's normal.

Thanks for all the advice.

this is not our problem, if it was... it'd bust the case every time.

ours just runs up against the compression stroke and stops and or runs backwards a little.
when it runs back a little, you may hear some gear noise.
if it goes back a lot you may hear a twang, which is the torque limiter letting go.
not sure when the EU bikes got it, but it's in everything after '95 here.

and yes, intruders have the same torque limiter.

Like others have said, your '14 should be fine. There are some that have no torque limiter and are prone to damage. Suzuki actually fixed this problem (can you believe it?  Grin) in later bikes.

Good. Glad to hear that. Interestingly enough, I've noticed if I come to a stop and let it idle for a few seconds just before shutdown -- just a normal "poof". Who knows. In any event, thanks everyone for the great information.

That's a good plan. Let it idle for a few seconds so the engine "calms down" a little. The backfires should turn in to poofs. It gives the bike character!

Mine kicks back about half the time.  I kind of like it.  The bike has a personality.
