Cranskshaft/Timing Cover
08/13/15 at 15:25:55

Well guys, i am out of ideas.
I am in need of a valve adjustment and i cannot seem to get this cover of my bike. I have tried every piece of metal that would fit into that slot and even paid the $17 for the special tool to remove it. So far all i have managed to do is remove a fair amount of metal from the cover.
Any suggestions?

Once they're over-tightened they are a booger...
Worse to worse, you may end up bustin' it... (hopefully not)

...but if you do,... replace it with one from a Intruder,.. they have an allen head..

Good luck...

Yea i may have to just drill it out. Anyone have any luck with that? Also is the cover from an intruder something that is readily available online or should i start hitting the scrapyards now?

Get the engine good and hot....then pull over and try to get it loose before the engine cools (wear gloves).

Here is a link to the part numbers.

After having looked at the slot for a while.....the hex looks a bit weird. Shocked

Listen, I just went though this problem.  Purchased an 87 savage from a owner who hadn't touched a bolt on the thing since.....87 Angry.  This timing port cover was killing me!  Nothing worked and I mean nothing!  I ended up drilling through it.  It did work with a little patience.  Only recommendation is use a shopvac when drilling through to try and pull as much of those shavings out.  They're aluminum and will be a pain to get out of your case since they're not magnetic.  Saves having to drain your oil and take the cover off.   Also replace the timin port cover with one that uses a 10mm alanwrench.  Good luck!

Once you're to the point of sacrificing the cover to get it off...
What's happened is the port cover has been screwed down till it contacts the cover.  I might drill the edge so that you got something that you can hit with a punch and a hammer till it unscrews.

I used a small crowbar. This isn't the one but it's close and cheap.  http://m.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-12-in-Pry-Bar/4777017
