Starter Rebuild

Hi folks,

So my starter has given it up. I haven't opened it up to do an autopsy but I'm hoping that all I'm going to need is rebuild. Does anyone have a recommendation on what kit to purchase? Are there some I should avoid. I did a search and someone got one off ebay that made his starter spin backwards.

Is there anything I should be aware of before I open her up?

How did you learn the starter is bad?

Heard about one that broke a magnet..

I JB welded one back under a lawnmower flywheel, but, they're small and centrifugal force works in my favor.
Recommend a clean bench, and care,, I've been in starters,, not this one.
Look at the brushes, how old is it? Miles?
An eraser to clean up the armature where the brushes run.
Or, 1,000grit,,

You'll need to make some kinda tools for keeping the brushes held back while you're sliding the armature in. Small stuff, I've used paperclips, bigger stuff, bigger wires..

When it is receiving 12v it spins a 1/16th of a turn and stops. Quote: not a lot of rebuilds done here. Well that's not encouraging Guess I'll open her up and see what we see. I hate to have to start pricing it out.

One of the strips of the commutator looked like someone had tried to turn it into a pretzel. In turn this has done a number on the brushes. I dumped a lot of brush dust/bits out and filed down the com. I'll put it back into Nessy tonight and let you know if she works or not.

There might be one languishing within a few miles of you. Someone may have one parked in a garage they would sell cheap. Maybe an ad on , whatever is common to you, here, Craig's list, Thrifty Nickel.. Maybe someone on this board has one. Unless you're in a hurry...

Yeah, ebay has a number of new ones posted for about $90 USD.

Which landed at my door is about $150 after exchange. I'm going to head out to my local salvage yard before I place an order like that though.

Unfortunately I commute daily on my bike so every day that she's down costs me $5-10 in transit so I don't have too much time to get one.
