noob rider here - I too find the shift from 4th to 5th difficult on my S40. All other gear shifts (up and down) are fine, but that one shift can be problematic for me. It seems easier the higher my speed is, but sometimes I just don't seem to be able to get her up to 5th...
So, what went through your mind while using the phrase, "get her up"?
There just seems to be more friction/resistance on the up-shift from 4th to 5th, than I experience in any other gear. The only way I can describe it is that the shift feels "notched" - like there's some slight obstruction part way through the shift that needs to be pushed passed to get her into 5th. Applying more pressure usually works, but every now and again no matter how much pressure I apply upwards I can't get the shift to happen.
Looking at Verslagen's suggestion I realize I haven't tried applying pressure before pulling in the clutch. I didn't do that as I assumed I might accidentally shift without the clutch, and I don't want to do that. I'll give that a go and see how I get on...

I've had this happen a few times, it seems to only happen when im a bit low on the oil for me, I never did the plug fix, so it might be worth looking at that.

Yes, that happens sometimes, the trick is when to start applying pressure, slipping the clutch, and dropping the throttle.

I've had that "notched" feeling but it's never bothered me, I just move up past the "notch" with no trouble and I've done just under 30000 miles on the bike. Must try and remember to try Versy's idea.

Could this be your problem? My bike definitely does not like being in such high gears at so low speeds. I'm usually still in 3rd gear up until 50-55, then 4th until 70, then 5th above that.
I've never run into a "false neutral" between 4th and 5th, and I'm fairly soft on my shifting. I do make sure to pull or push the lever through its full range of motion before letting go though. So perhaps that's the difference.

Wow! I'm in 5th at about 40-45 and the bike thanks me for it. 3rd gear at 50 mph and I don't think she would speak to me ever again! There's a short stretch of highway near my house that's only 30 mph. I do it in 3rd gear.

Sounds like you might be bogging the bike.
Stay in 3rd until 50mph or so and don't go to 5th unless you're cruising on the highway or going over 65.

She runs smooth as glass at 30 in 3rd gear and 40 in 5th. No chugging or sputtering. You shouldn't have to pull 3rd gear to 55.

I had a false neutral also. Turned out that my clutch lever mounting hole was to large. I reamed the hole out and installed a bushing to reduce the play. Solved the problem. Shifts smooth as cream cheese spread on a bagel. Must be a previous owner had it apart and lost a piece. Not sure but lever was really sloppy and must have had poor engagement at times.
